INDUSTRY UPDATE

A surge in sales and recent expansion see’s Ceiling2Floor increase it’s van fleet to 23

BiKBBI – A compliant workforce is a lower risk workforce

T

he skills shortage isn’t a new topic of discussion for The British Institute of KBB Installation, although it’s usually

followed by a cry for help around the need for apprenticeships and our associated efforts in developing them. However, the skills shortage is as much about the challenges of today as

it is about the solution for tomorrow. A shortage of skilled labour will inevitably attract opportunists, and as the value for tradespeople increases, so does the attractiveness of the sector… not only for genuine infiltrators, but for rogue ones too. We saw the reputational damage that opportunists caused for the

double-glazing industry back in the 1980s and 1990s when a surge for demand in uPVC windows outweighed the supply of experienced fitters in the sector. The result was an influx of cowboys doing a bad job and leaving a trail of disgruntled, out-of-pocket consumers behind as they moved on to their next opportunity. So how can you tell the difference between the good, the bad and the

downright ugly? There’s no straight-forward answer sadly. This is because the industry is

largely unregulated and, without a mandatory requirement for registration, the sector relies on a number of ‘red flag’ indicators to assist in the avoidance of troublemakers. Kitchen and bathroom installation is a minefield of legislation and it’s

usually where these red flags will catch businesses and consumers out. Aside from insurance (which is a complex beast in itself), kitchen and bathroom installation covers several complex areas of work, including gas, electrical and building regulation, water regulations and health and safety. All these elements are moving parts, with updates on the rules and changes to policy and law happening on almost a weekly basis. So, appointing or collaborating with a new installer, or even an existing

one, can be a risky business for any stakeholder – especially where brands and reputation are concerned. With the emergence of social media, a bad experience with an

installation can quickly turn into a nightmare for the installation business, and even more so if that bad experience involves a compliance related matter. So, our advice would always be to forensically dissect the compliance for

your installer – whether you’re a consumer, or a retail business adopting the service of an installer. Make someone accountable for ensuring the credentials are correct and that they are regularly reviewed. The British Institute of KBB Installation (BiKBBI) manages compliance for

a wide range of retail and manufacturing businesses – reducing risk and cost – often doing so for free. For more information about how we protect people and brands, visit: https://www.bikbbi.org.uk/retailers/
