WORKSURFACES & SPLASHBACKS
Ceramic opens up new opportunities in style and in functionality
K
Comment by Simon Boocock Managing Director, CRL Stone
itchen trends come and go but one material choice that is only set to grow and grow in popularity is ceramic for worktops. There are a number of reasons for this, not least because of the sheer versatility of the material, which is brilliant for kitchen designers looking to give their clients an abundance of choice and to create personalised spaces. Style is of course a huge priority when it comes to worksurface choice; it’s a highly visible area of the kitchen and even more so in the open-plan setting. The beauty of ceramic, among lots of things, is that it can be chosen to emulate the look of natural materials like stone and timber, often not so suitable practically speaking to the kitchen environment, but hugely on-trend. Ceramic offers consumers the best of both worlds, emulating the natural beauty of such materials while being a highly functional surface on which to prepare food and carry out a myriad of other chores. Available in a range of thicknesses, ceramics can be used for
different surfaces too, with a 12mm or 20mm worktop paired with a 6mm splashback, as just one on many possibilities.
Convenience, longevity and ease of maintenance are all important to the busy consumer too and likely to influence their purchasing decisions when investing in a new kitchen. Ceramic worksurfaces conform in every way here too, as a non-porous material that is easy to clean and leaves nowhere for bacteria to hide. Spillages can be simply wiped away with no fear of staining, the material offers scratch, stain and water resistance and, perhaps most importantly, ceramic delivers all of this with no requirement for sealing, either during manufacturer or after installation and use. So, where the luxury look of marble, granite and concrete may have become the go-to for kitchen worksurfaces, ceramic has made the trend more accessible and opened up new opportunities for retailers and for designers eager to fulfil a creative brief.
