From curved cladding to bold colour schemes, there are many features that elevate today’s high-end public sector buildings. However, when these features  the vast array of penetrations required on mission critical buildings, such as hospitals, things can go awry. Penetrations are essential to allow


services such as gas, water, electricity and HVAC, as well as ducts and cabling into and out of the building. There are two types of penetrations, those on the roof and vertical penetrations through the wall.


Vertical penetrations are one


 building. They can be problematic for two reasons: structural stability and complete water tightness. Space can be at a premium if large numbers of vertical penetrations are concentrated in one area. Further complexity comes if the vertical penetrations are an unusual shape or size. When function undermines form  functional. It’s designed to protect the building fabric. Water ingress can damage 


safety performance, and affect thermal performance. It can also lead to damp and mould growth which can adversely impact  infrastructure and equipment within the building itself. The problem is that if the


  stage, principal and sub-contractors may focus on function to the detriment of form. Traditionally, vertical penetration


details would be closed off using a plate, mastic and membrane solution.
