Over to You OVER TO YOU

Tim Tomblin, Director, Tiato, www.tiato.co.uk

TIATO HAS RECENTLY MADE TWO SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENTS BRINGING IN A CANON COLORADO M5W AND THE MIMAKI CJV200-160. TIM TOMBLIN, THE WILTSHIRE-BASED COMPANY’S DIRECTOR, HAS REVELLED IN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE INVESTMENTS.

What is having the greatest impact on your business at the moment?

Increased exposure of the business is having a positive impact on the amount of work we are seeing pass through our doors. Returning customers are a key aspect of our business and we routinely reach out to see if we can be of any assistance. Due to increased capacity with new machinery and processes, we are now aiming for new business and are seeing some good results with new clients.

Where do you see the greatest wide-format opportunities? For us, it’s coming from the retail sector. We produce large seasonal campaigns and rollouts for premium retail companies. This has been a real sector of growth for us over the past 18 months and seems to only be increasing.

What would/ is making your day-to-day operations easier? Having a systematic approach to work both in terms of time allocated and machinery. This is something we are constantly evolving and improving to ensure we can keep up with demand while maintaining our high level of quality.

What is your favourite bit of kit? The new Canon Colorado M5W is undoubtably the most important piece of kit we have; the capability it provides is second to none for us. It has allowed us to increase the amount of work we produce but crucially reduce the time it takes to make it. In conjunction with our JWEI flatbed cutter/CNC our production line is almost seamless.

What is the best business advice you have been given? To grow your business you have to invest, not only in monetary terms but also in time and people. This has been something I have truly abided by over the past few years with taking big steps in the business such as taking on staff, moving premises and investing.

(L) Alex Mitchell, head of production with Tim Tomblin, Director

What is your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement is looking at the business now and how far I have come. Looking back now it’s been a long road but one I wouldn’t change and has led me to a place where I am truly proud of what I have built.

How long have you been in the industry? What attracted you to it? I have been in the print industry for almost 20 years, going through a range of roles. That has allowed me to learn many aspects of the trade. It was a trade that I was on the edge of but had an opportunity present itself that interested me and I took it with both hands.

What is the key to your business’ success? Initially it was drive and determination when starting out. It’s now changed to efficiency with help from staff and improvements in working area and machinery.

You have recently made a double purchase with the Canon Colorado M5W and the Mimaki CJV200-160. Why these machines and how have they helped your company? The Canon was something I had been interested in for a while and with a surge in demand for work I needed to purchase something that would increase production speed while ensuring it would not impact the quality of the final job. The Mimaki replaced a 10-year-old CJV-300. I have always been a fan of Mimaki and having one allows us to cover a wider variety of work. Having a solvent printer alongside a UV Gel was a winning combination for us and we routinely run both printers.

What are your impressions of the printers? I cannot praise the Canon enough for its ease of use, the technology and the finished product. For such a complex machine it’s relatively easy to use and understand. The speed and quality of the print is something that continues to blow me away on each job we do. The Mimaki is exactly what I hoped a modern version of my old printer would be, its quicker, more advanced while being a familiar machine to work with.

TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS YOU HAVE TO INVEST, NOT ONLY IN MONETARY

TERMS BUT ALSO IN TIME AND PEOPLE
