WILL THE MESSAGE STICK?

commitment to tackling waste through the waste hierarchy - emphasising waste prevention and minimisation, creating innovative waste recycling solutions, and exploring waste-to-energy alternatives to redirect materials away from landfill.” The SAISAG is now endeavouring to assemble more

WE NEED TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO MAKE HEADWAY ON URGENT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. SO SAY THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF A NEW SELF-ADHESIVE INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY ACTION GROUP. WILL THE INDUSTRY PAY HEED TO ITS REASONING, OBJECTIVES AND ACTIONS?

In a significant stride towards a more sustainable future it’s been hugely positive to see the recent formation of the Self-Adhesive Industry Sustainability Action Group, a collective determined to steer the industry a greener way of working.

The founding members of the group are Pyramid

Display, Greens the Signmakers, 3M, Antalis, William Smith, Metamark, Avery Dennison, Arlon, Spandex, Contravision, RGVA, OPG and Reconomy and it’s chaired by sustainability consultant Steve Lister, who points out that: “The current emphasis on sustainability has reached unprecedented heights, resonating with a resounding call for action. Faced with the urgency of the crisis, a collaborative approach emerged as a beacon of hope because confronting the most intricate sustainability challenges necessitates a unified front. “While each [SAISAG founding] company had been diligently devising its sustainability strategies and pioneering innovative, eco-friendly products, confronting issues concerning end-of-life recycling and circular economy presented a unique challenge. It’s become increasingly apparent that a joint effort is needed to surmount these hurdles. Thus, the group’s mission has crystallised into a collaborative endeavour to chart a transformative course towards a circular economy. “Our mission is to lead the self-adhesive films

industry towards a sustainable future by minimising our environmental impact. We are steadfast in our

industry trailblazers to confront the pressing sustainability challenges faced by the self-adhesive films industry. “By pooling resources and expertise, we firmly believe that our collaborative efforts can usher in a tangible transformation, mitigating the environmental impact of our products and fostering a sustainable legacy for generations to come,” stresses Lister. “Individually, many companies are working on their own sustainability strategies and developing innovative and sustainable products. However, when it comes to the challenge of tackling end-of-life recycling and circular economy issues, they are not going to be able to solve this on their own. Taking millions and millions of pieces of self-adhesive with siliconised liners from around the world needs a collaborative approach. “The great thing is that we are already seeing a positive response just from the initial founding companies coming together and talking about the issue. However, the group fully understands the challenges they are going to face moving forward and hopes more will come forward to exchange knowledge and share best practices, leading to innovative solutions that propel the entire industry towards more sustainable solutions. “With a united front, the group will also have a stronger voice to advocate for policy changes and industry-wide adoption of enhanced sustainable practices.” It all sounds great, but in asking for more to get

involved with the SAISAG Lister addresses a key issue: “The group has been asked how we are going to quantify success. This is a really difficult one to answer at this early stage but we will definitely be measuring success as we move forward. We don’t want to make big commitments around future success until we truly understand the scope of the challenges we are going to face.

CONFRONTING THE MOST INTRICATE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES NECESSITATES A UNIFIED FRONT.

Lister continues: “The Self-Adhesive Industry Sustainability Action Group will initially focus on waste - prioritising waste prevention and minimisation to reduce the environmental footprint of self-adhesive materials. After this phase the group will look at recycling initiatives to support the development of new, innovative, robust recycling initiatives that will drastically reduce landfill waste and increase recycling rates, transforming waste materials into valuable resources.

“The group knows it will face huge challenges with

waste recycling so it will explore waste-to-energy solutions to promote waste-to-energy alternatives and to divert waste materials away from landfills, transforming them into renewable sources of energy. “Finally, we want the group to focus on circular economy advocacy by adopting circular economy principles to ensure the efficient use of resources and minimise waste generation, enhance recycling opportunities, and promote a more sustainable, self-adhesive materials industry.”
