Solar installation integrates renewable energy at heritage site


Over 1,000 photovoltaic panels have been installed at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall on the roof of a Category B listed building, part of a major project completed by VITAL ENERGI. Commissioned by Glasgow City Council, the £1.5 million project is a central component of the city’s wider climate action strategy, intended to reduce reliance on grid electricity and cut carbon emissions. The array is expected to supply around 20% of Kelvin Hall’s annual electricity needs and generate an estimated £182,000 in savings each year. Scott Lutton, director at Vital Energi


Scotland, says: “Working on Kelvin Hall’s protected Category B listed structure presented unique engineering challenges. Our team developed custom


mounting solutions for the distinctive barrel-shaped roof while preserving the building’s historic character. This required specialised safety systems for installers working at height and strategic relocation of inverters to optimise system performance. “We considered more than just the


technical aspects of the project – we actively engaged with the community to ensure the voices of those affected by potential disruptions were heard and respected.” The project adds to the 46

pressurising mains water, which is then distributed to nozzles positioned around the glasshouses. These nozzles release a fine mist into the air, raising humidity levels without leaving surfaces damp. To maintain water quality, the system includes reverse osmosis filtration and ultraviolet light sterilisation, helping to prevent mineral deposits and ensure hygienic operation. This upgrade replaces an older method that involved wetting down heating pipes


to create humidity. With the new system in place, staff can maintain more consistent conditions that closely replicate the plants’ natural rainforest environments. Species such as cocoa, vanilla, ferns and climbing plants benefit from this stable atmosphere, while the added evaporative cooling effect also helps regulate internal temperatures. Garden staff report that the system has improved environmental control and made daily management more

LIGHTING SCHEME Providing illumination for medical students


LUCECO has supplied interior and exterior lighting for a refurbishment project at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The installation focused on the ground floor of the Mary Kingsley building, converting the area into a multi-use space for student learning, research and revision. The lighting scheme was delivered in


collaboration with The James Mercer Group. A range of LED luminaires from Luceco Lighting and DW Windsor were selected for the project. Internally, products from the Platinum, Epsilon, F-Type, Contour and Tempus ranges were used. These were installed in a mix of surface-mounted, suspended and recessed formats to suit the varied layout of corridors, study zones and shared spaces.


Linear Contour luminaires were suspended from ceilings in corridors and paired with Platinum downlights to produce a consistent and well-lit environment. Lighting controls were integrated using both hard-wired options and Luceco’s Platform system, a wireless solution that enables building-wide

Commercial air source heat pumps from MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC have been installed at Building Eight in Exchange Quay, Manchester, replacing the previous gas boiler system. The installation is part of a strategy by the building’s landlord, Till Asset Management, to improve energy performance and reduce emissions in line with upcoming efficiency regulations. Twelve CAHV-P500YB-HPB heat pumps, each delivering 40kW, were fitted in a cascaded arrangement to optimise performance and prolong equipment life. The system uses historical climate data for sizing, ensuring that it meets local heating demands, even during winter


conditions. The units provide hot water temperatures up to 70°C without the need for additional heating sources, supplying heat across the building via existing four-pipe fan coil units. This allowed for a phased transition from gas with minimal disruption to tenants. Following the upgrade, the building


achieved an Energy Performance Certificate rating of B, meeting targets set for 2030 under the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards. The installation remained operational during one of the coldest winters in Manchester in recent years, confirming system reliability. The success of this project has led to plans for similar upgrades across other
