High energy density collectors at the British Library
NAKED ENERGY has completed the installation of a solar heat system at the British Library, said to be the largest of its kind in the UK. The installation comprises 950 solar collectors across 712.5m2 of the library’s roof space. It is expected to reduce the building’s CO₂ emissions by 55 tonnes and generate 216 MWh of energy annually. Hospital overcomes logistical challenges to upgrade cooling systems
A solution from ICS COOL ENERGY has helped a hospital in Scotland overcome logistical challenges to upgrade critical cooling systems. The hospital faced an urgent need for a reliable cooling solution due to its outdated infrastructure, essential for maintaining proper temperature control in operating theatres and other sensitive areas. The installation required an 80kW cooling capacity, but the plant room’s location on the upper fl oors posed signifi cant transport and access issues. To address these challenges, ICS Cool Energy conducted several site assessments to devise an eff ective installation strategy. The team selected
two i-Chiller 80kW units, which were de-gassed and disassembled at its Bradford workshop. The components

technology, the collectors will also be used to help maintain the precise temperature and humidity conditions needed to preserve the national collection cared for by the British Library. The installation was approved during the planning phase, with consideration given to the library’s status as a Grade I-listed building. The collectors have a low-profi le design, ensuring they do not alter the building’s architectural appearance from the street level. This initiative aligns with broader
eff orts to transition public buildings toward renewable energy sources. The project was undertaken in partnership with CBRE Global Workplace Solutions, and Naked Energy recently secured investments to further develop and
expand its solar heat technology. ■

existing heat recovery system that experienced issues with water-side freezing. The SEC-200 (Sustainable Energy Controller) was selected for its potential energy savings, reduced carbon footprint, and attractive return on investment. This unit can maintain hot water production even when the cooling system is inactive, addressing the high demands for hot water needed for cleaning and other processes. The SEC-200 recovers heat from a
Danfoss Optyma Slim condensing unit and a Modine stainless steel evaporator, with all equipment supplied by FridgeDIRECT. The system operates with refrigerant R449A
and maintains a constant temperature of 14°C in the butter preparation room. Todd Montague, director at Severn Cooling & Electrical, comments: “We engaged FridgeDIRECT to select and design the system, and the support from the FridgeTECH team in terms of design and commissioning made the whole process seamless. The install was straightforward, with prompt deliveries

system was recharged with refrigerant, and all necessary installations were completed. By overcoming

of disassembling, transporting, and reassembling the chillers in a restricted-access area, ICS Cool Energy says it minimised disruption and completed the installation effi ciently. The hospital now benefi ts from a reliable, energy-effi cient cooling system, ensuring long-term operational stability and reduced risk of equipment

When Scottish high-end alcohol label printing company, Spirit Label Solutions, moved into a new £5 million warehouse, it asked local business Electrical Solutions to come up with a lighting scheme, and with the help of LUCECO they delivered the solution. A site survey was conducted to assess the lighting needs, which included a warehouse required a lighting scheme suitable for both manufacturing and offi ce environments. The design aimed to balance natural light from large skylights with artifi cial lighting for darker periods. LED lighting was selected for its
ability to meet the recommended Colour Rendering Index (CRI) standards, which is important in printing to ensure
accurate colour representation. The chosen products included Luceco’s Elara Bay LED luminaires for high ceilings in the warehouse and surface-mounted LuxPanels for the offi ce areas. The installation was designed to
ensure consistent light output without the fl ickering associated with traditional lighting solutions. Chris Bryant, group MD of Electrical Solutions, says: “We chose to work with Luceco as we trusted them with their proposal and knew we were going to have their support throughout the entire project, from planning and ordering to fi tting and future repairs, and the client was delighted
