Roof upgrade at brewery includes solar PHOTOVOLTAICS
Oakham Ales, a brewery based in Peterborough, recently completed the installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system with the support of ELECTRON GREEN, a solar developer. The project involved fitting a 458.85
kWp solar array on top of a newly overclad steel roof, which covers 2,084m2 and includes just over 1,000 PV panels. The installation was carried out in spring 2025 and was designed to address the challenge of the brewery’s ageing roof, which was upgraded as part of the same project. Electron Green owns and manages
the solar system, providing Oakham Ales with discounted, fixed-rate electricity through a Power Purchase Agreement. The system is expected to reduce the brewery’s reliance on grid electricity by 15% and deliver first-year
savings of nearly £11,000. Over its lifespan, the installation is projected to prevent more than 2,200 tonnes of carbon emissions. “Providing a free solar system with ongoing management to Oakham Ales has allowed it to cut its carbon footprint and energy costs in one glorious swoop,” comments Daniel Green, CEO of Electron Green. “We’re here to provide businesses with flexibility in how they manage and pay for electricity. As energy demands are expected to rise by 50% over the next decade, businesses need confidence in their energy supply and greater control over their costs.” The installation was completed without disrupting the brewery’s operations and required no capital
outlay from Oakham Ales. ■

RIGID DUCTING
Quality ducting plays key role in MVHR system
Rigid ducting from DOMUS VENTILATION has been installed at a new luxury aparthotel in one of York’s most architecturally renowned streets, Micklegate, as part of the mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system installed throughout the new development. A new addition to the Supercity
Aparthotel portfolio, it features 46 apartment suites designed for luxury, practicality and comfort, along with a ground floor restaurant and bar. Guest comfort is improved by an MVHR
system, but it can only perform to its best ability when paired with suitable, quality ducting. Domus Ventilation ducting has exacting tolerances and connects together for minimal air and moisture loss and maximum system efficiency. The ducting has been designed to work in harmony as part of a system and has been third party tested for end-to-end system performance. Domus 204x60 Rigid Duct and fittings

have been used at the new Micklegate aparthotel throughout, along with Domus sound attenuators. The latter absorbs sound over a range of audible frequencies travelling through ductwork, such as the MVHR fan, external traffic noise or room-to-room cross talk. York based M&E contractor J. H.
Shouksmith & Sons, a long-time Domus Ventilation customer, was responsible for specifying and installing the ducting on this project. “We always use Domus ducting on any contract we undertake due to the ease of installation and the large mixture of fittings available,” says
Carl Turner, senior contracts manager. ■

installation of a bespoke electrical infrastructure at Beechmoor Retirement Village in Chester. The project involved providing a dedicated substation to supply electricity to 155 retirement flats, as well as communal facilities such as a restaurant, café, and wellness area. The installation was part of a larger development managed by the Elliott Group and required the delivery of electrical landlord supplies to six separate villas, along with a main supply to the central pavilion and a bulk connection for electric vehicle charging points. Part of the project
involved Power On undertaking directional drilling under a large and busy road junction on the A41 in Chester. Known for its solutions for complex utilities projects, Power On worked closely with
on sustainability. The external wall lights are equipped with passive infrared (PIR) sensors, enabling automatic operation in response to movement, which enhances both safety and energy savings. Alison Bowyer, sales manager at Markden Homes, comments: “Our design and build processes go above and beyond industry standards, with each home crafted with
meticulous attention to detail, fusing luxury, functionality and comfort for an unrivalled living experience. “The Luceco Group
suite of brands ticked all the boxes for us, across quality, design, efficiency and sustainability, delivering product solutions across the board for the high- quality specification of the Tean Valley View
development.” ■

the highways authorities to complete the 109m of drilling from the high- voltage connection point to the site, without having to close the road. A key technical element of the Beechmoor project was the implementation of an ‘X-Type’ substation. This is a more complex, non- standard arrangement, usually seen in larger-scale infrastructure settings. Unlike standard substations, the X-Type requires a bespoke indoor brick-built enclosure
to house specialist equipment, including a wall-mounted Solkor protection panel, auxiliary batteries, enhanced monitoring systems, and communications interfaces. These additions enable high-voltage network monitoring and increased fault detection capability, providing extra resilience to the supply
infrastructure. ■
