HUMIDIFICATION & DEHUMIDIFICATION
Low energy ultrasonic humidifiers installed in clean rooms
Helping to ensure that energy consumption is kept to a minimum, HUMIDECO has installed a hybrid humidification system to serve a number of clean rooms at Leonardo in Luton. Leonardo is a global security company with a broad technological capability in aerospace, defence and security. It is one of the biggest suppliers of defence and security equipment to the UK Ministry of Defence. The company operates from nine main sites across the UK, employing over 8,500 highly skilled people. At Leonardo Luton, Humideco were
tasked with proposing a more robust and reliable humidification solution for the HVAC systems serving a number of clean rooms. These rooms are required to
operate within tight environmental limits, 24/7, to ensure the reliability and performance of sensitive equipment and components, and the existing steam humidifiers were often proving unreliable, and thought to have insufficient capacity to meet demand, year round. A combination of low energy ultrasonic
systems, to meet the base load, were installed within the AHUs, along with resistive steam systems to increase capacity at times of higher demand. BMS controls for the humidifiers were also upgraded, to manage the sequencing between the low energy and steam humidifiers, in order to ensure the desired conditions were achieved. ▄

Measuring the environmental impact
of industrial dehumidification A new benchmark for measuring and reporting the environmental impact of industrial dehumidification has been established by MUNTERS. The standard was developed in collaboration with Bureau Veritas, an independent testing, inspections, and certification provider. Since 2022, the manufacturer has
partnered with Bureau Veritas to conduct Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) on several of its products, including dehumidifiers, air treatment systems, and air-extracting fans. During this process, Bureau Veritas recognized Munters' pioneering efforts as the first in the industry to perform LCAs on its products and encouraged them to develop a Product Category Rule (PCR). A Product Category Rule (PCR) is a
specific set of rules, requirements, and guidelines for developing LCAs and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for a specific product category. For customers, this means they can
trust the environmental information they receive about a product. For manufacturers, it ensures that their environmental impact assessments are consistent, transparent, and comparable to others in the industry. “The standard helps create a level
playing field and promotes fair competition and innovation,” says Michelle Marrone, eco design manager at Munters.
EIBI | JULY / AUGUST 2025 The standard was developed with input
from two of Munters' competitors and underwent a rigorous process with Bureau Veritas as a moderator. “As an industry innovator and thought
leader, it’s important to drive development and create transparency – and work hand in hand with our competitors. We have had great collaborations throughout this process, and I’m very excited that we finally have a standard that we can all be proud of,” Michelle adds. ▄
