ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING SOLUTION MEETS THE DEMANDS OF A SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FACILITY
5 Journey Campus is one of nine innovation workspaces at Journey Campus, a landmark development designed to support the Cambridge life sciences and technology sector. When the four-storey building underwent a major refurbishment, it needed a lighting solution capable of serving a variety of spaces, including scientific laboratories, liquid nitrogen and gas stores, meeting and board rooms, breakout areas and a modern café. To meet the demands, Luceco partnered
with KRB Installations to deliver a comprehensive, fully integrated, LED lighting and controls solution. The full project scope encompassed external, internal and emergency lighting, all integrated into Luceco’s Platform fully wireless lighting control system. The client also required separately metered energy monitoring to satisfy Part L of the Building Regulations, alongside full remote emergency monitoring capability, delivering both regulatory compliance and long-term operational efficiency. Given the breadth of space types and the
architect’s clearly defined vision for the finished building, Luceco specified a wide-ranging selection of high-performance LED luminaires and control products. These included LuxPanel Extra, Luceco’s flagship backlit LED panel, delivering balanced, energy-efficient illumination across key areas

The design process took several months, so there were many amendments to the scope and functionality of the lighting. Other solutions included its Contour Direct/Indirect extruded aluminium suspended linear luminaires; and Platinum and Platinum Mini Downlights which were supplied with black bezels to complement the overall ceiling aesthetic, delivering controlled, low-glare illumination throughout. For many businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and public buildings, replacing entire lighting schemes can be both costly and disruptive. The addition of DALI-2 controls in the External System also enables compatibility with intelligent lighting systems, including occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting, helping organisations reduce unnecessary energy consumption by ensuring light is only used when needed. Solar-powered smart streetlights
Conflow Power Group (CPG), working with its partner Mora Energy, has signed an agreement with the Government of Katsina State, Nigeria, for the deployment of 50,000 iLamp units. These solar- powered smart streetlights will double as a revenue-generating distributed AI data centre. Each iLamp can, in addition to
selling vast amounts of AI compute, also be configured with AI-enabled cameras and monitoring systems, supporting applications such as public safety, traffic management and infrastructure protection, subject to local regulation and data governance frameworks. Each unit can also provide public WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity and high-efficiency LED lighting – all solar-powered with no additional operational cost to the state. Edward Fitzpatrick, chief executive officer of Conflow Power Group,
said: “By contrast with traditional data centre models, which typically require 300MW of grid power, millions of litres of cooling water and years of construction, Katsina’s 13.75 PetaOPS arrives on an iLamp post powered by the sun, operational from day one. As the first to cross the line, CPG will locate its first factory in Katsina and create Nigeria’s first Green Utility.”
