INTERVIEW The Jump Seat has been

developed to fit a massive range of bikes for several different customer types – the versatility of the product allows quick fitting between multiple varied bike types, whether it’s the school run on a classic city-trekking bike, or the trail ride on the full-sus e-MTB. It’s fair to say the RRP has increased significantly from its predecessor, but we consider the £129.99 RRP to be good value for the consumer and provides the dealer with a healthy profit margin.

the best place to support enthusiasts and families on their cycling journeys, be it weekend leisure riding or high-level bike racing and adventuring. We’d rather be part of a network we believe in than chase volume through channels that often don’t serve the customer properly.

Tell us about the design and features of the new Jump seat, how much of the design was shaped by the need to remove the “faff” and friction for the end-user? Out of the box, the only ‘assembly’ required is the fitting of the saddle. Once the initial adjustment for the bicycle type and passenger has been completed, fitting and removal can be done in seconds using the 5mm hex key stowed within the product.

In terms of design, to ensure the highest levels of safety and

reliability, we partnered with SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification organisation. Together, we developed a bespoke testing protocol based on key elements of EN 14344, enhanced by our own Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

At an RRP of £129.99, the Jump Seat might be seen as a significant investment for a family. When a dealer is standing on the shop floor explaining that price point to a parent, what is the story they are telling? Through the development of the Little Explorer and working alongside an independent testing house to develop a testing protocol (it falls outside the recognised EN standard for bicycle child seats due to its fitting location on the bike), we gained invaluable real-world insights. The result was a product that did the job very well for a number of years, but one we knew could be significantly improved. All components are silicone-covered to protect the bicycle

frame, the Jump Seat rider, and the material choices reflect the varied requirements of touchpoints on the bicycle and maintain integrity to keep the passenger safe.

Oxford has a broad presence across the children’s accessory market. How does the Jump Seat fit into the bigger picture, and would you say there are practical advantages for an IBD in leaning into a single-brand ecosystem for their youth and family offerings? When a parent walks into a bike shop with a small child and says they want to start riding together, the Jump Seat might be the headline product, but the conversation doesn’t and shouldn’t stop there. That child needs a helmet, and Oxford has a fantastic range of junior helmets, covering toddlers right the way through to older children who are starting to find their own cycling independence. The family adventures often grow in line with the child, the family’s needs evolve, and Oxford is there for every stage, whether it’s security equipment, travel and adventure luggage, or even simply parts, accessories and MINT cleaning and maintenance products that keep the family bikes on the trails and roads, and working properly.

What is Oxford’s perspective on where the children’s market segment is heading? We’d love to hear how the Jump Seat fits into your broader vision for getting more families and the next generation of riders out on two wheels. Families are riding more, riding further, and riding more diverse bikes than ever before. The development of E-bikes and hugely improved children’s bikes in recent years is continuing to accelerate this change. Many parents who wouldn’t have considered a long ride before are now regularly riding with their children for both leisure and travel. Children’s cycling kit and equipment, be it the child seat category or kid’s protectives, have to keep up, to ensure a fun and safe experience for all members of the family. The Jump Seat is part of our response to these shifts. It’s not a niche product for one type of rider anymore. It’s been engineered to fit the full breadth of how families are riding. Wider compatibility, full adjustability, and ease of use. The next generation of riders is out there; we just need to make it as easy as possible for families to ride together. 
