Growing the future of the industry

ompanies across the games industry are more aware than ever of the need to improve diversity.

While the industry has some way to go, studios at least seem to be beginning to understand that opening their doors to new perspectives can only serve to make their games better, and our industry a more welcoming place to work. Of course, studios are constantly on the

lookout for new talent – especially when it comes to the new starters and young graduates who will be the industry leaders of tomorrow. Creative Assembly has partnered with

Teesside University to help address diversity and recruitment concerns. The developer has launched a scholarship programme for Teesside University’s Computer Game Design degree course, awarding two £9,000 scholarships to two students – based on the eligibility criteria of a household income below £25,000 a year and/or that identifies

as female and/or black ethnic minority. As well as the £9,000 scholarship, the chosen students will receive mentorship directly from Creative Assembly in order to further enhance their education. The two deserving students chosen for

the scholarships are 31 year old Daniel Gething from Horden, County Durham and 18 year old Rebecca Arachchiae, who is from Gateshead. For Gething, gaming provided an

escape, and became a coping mechanism when he was younger and suffering from depression. Gething lived with his grandparents growing up, and shared his love of gaming with his granddad, who went to college to study computing after he retired from his job as an electrician. Arachchiae, meanwhile, has had a love

of gaming since she was a teenager, and has a specific interest in creating costumes and characters, and aspires to work for a major studio.
