Working in a Winter Wonderland H
ello, reader! For basically the entire year, I’ve been writing these in advance of going to some big event or other, but it feels like we’re now heading into the “winding down” portion of the year, and the only event in my immediate future is the Manchester Christmas Market, where I am mostly looking forward to a devouring a yorkshire pudding burrito and copious amounts of mulled wine and hot chocolate before I migrate for the winter.
I did have the pleasure of going to Game Republic’s GaMaYo event in Wakefield earlier this month, however
(more on that next issue), and I must say that meeting all of you out in the field is always the best way to recharge the old motivation batteries, and fill myself with the determination to do a good job at whatever it is I’m trying to accomplish at the time.
As we look towards wrapping up this issue, I am all set to put together the next exciting cohort of the 30 Under 30, who are obviously all so incredible that they never make it easy. Alex Boucher is also putting out feelers for the DEVELOP/JOBS Guide, which will also be making a much overdue return in the next issue. We’re treating it as a bit of a ‘talent showcase special’ for lack of a better name.
I also continue to co-run the game studio Hologram Ghost, where things are still going well. We’re branching out into co-dev, mock reviews and consultancy, and other people seem excited about it, which is always nice and encouraging. I’m also still finding time to learn and practice Japanese, and seem to be putting at least half an hour aside every day to make goo-goo eyes at Valve’s new Steam Machine and Steam Controller, which will probably be a game changer for the entire industry early next year, even if it’s not immediately apparent.
This issue of the magazine is full of variety, and I hope you all find something interesting or enjoyable in it as you make your way through it. Our contributors (both regular and new) are all awesome, and I couldn’t make the book come out on schedule without them. If you learn anything, or are entertained by any of them, I would very much encourage you to reach out to them and tell them what a good job they’re doing.
This’ll be our last issue to come out before Christmas and New Year, so I’d just like to take this chance to wish all of you a happy holiday season, and look forward to getting another issue in front of you all in January. See you then!
