What is happening in the bread market and what are your thoughts? Consumers’ return to work is driving growth back into the on the go sandwich market, which our members supply. That said, the demand for sandwiches hasn’t yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, and with new hybrid working patterns, perhaps it’s unlikely to. White bread is a huge part of our members’ retail business, but multi-seeded loaves and other grains are increasingly popular too, with shoppers, and particularly those working from home, looking for more variety in the everyday bakery goods they buy. They want a variety of breads that build on their traditional loaf, and
exciting bakery options to make their day special, and our members are continually innovating to provide new choices for the consumer.
What is the consumer stance on bread and bakery right now?
Consumers look to the bread category for its great value in these trying times, and its nutritional importance as part of a healthy balanced diet. With household budgets tight and the price of bread relatively low, not surprisingly it’s more the case than ever that so many households look to bread as a nutritious great value dependable staple.
