TURNKEY SOLUTIONS

Partnering for success Andrea Boggio, CEO at Sacmi Packaging & Chocolate, says that the definition of a turnkey solution is one that is not a pre-packaged static solution. Rather, it is a complete, bespoke, integrated solution that is designed to meet the customers’ specific needs. “To achieve this, the solution provider needs to be able to provide an array of technological proposals covering every stage of the process, as this is the only way to maximise flexibility and deliver a truly ‘tailor-made’ solution that reflects customer requirements,” says Andrea. “What is crucial here is a holistic approach. More than a just supplying equipment, a true turnkey project should be the result of a partnership that focuses on the customer’s requirements from the earliest stages of its creation. Turnkey plant needs to be able to integrate easily into the existing plant, guaranteeing optimised data exchange and delivering a shared human-machine interface to simplify operators’ tasks. Andrea argues that, as opposed to

off-the-shelf solutions, turnkey plant should be considered wherever a smooth, practical layout is required and where a confectionery manufacturer needs to speed up line installation and commissioning. It is also desirable where customers may need to reduce their commitment to following the project at internal management and engineering levels, due to lack of time or in-house expertise. In both of these scenarios, being able to count on a sole partner offers a good solution, not least because the latter can also provide certification for the complete line which negates the need for the confectionery producer to employ external engineering firms to undertake this task.

Another area in which the turnkey approach comes into its own, according to Andrea, is when the plant is up and running. Having a sole provider of the solution allows for rationalisation of spare parts requirements.

Because of their all-inclusive nature, turnkey plants are also a better choice when manufacturers need to optimise and balance line performance and productivity and where minimisation of energy consumption and smoother management of production spikes are a

must. The provider should be able to ensure it is possible to monitor all the relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) – preferably in real-time interconnected to total cost of ownership (TCO) and overall equipment efficiency (OEE) data. So, when developing a turnkey solution is also important that
