Are you able to help dispel the myth that ‘turnkey’ solutions may not offer the flexibility needed within the confectionery industry today?


Andrea Boggio, CEO at SACMI Packaging & Chocolate (AB): A ‘turnkey’ confectionery solution today is no longer simply a pre-packaged static package. Instead, it is a complete and integrated solution, designed and shaped to meet a customer’s real needs. This is really only possible to achieve if the supplier can count on a wide range of technological proposals, at every stage of the process, which allows the turnkey solution to maintain maximum flexibility for a truly ‘tailor-made’ solution.


Stefania Montalti, Communication Manager at CEPI (SM): The benefits of a turnkey solution should be immediately clear. The customer is using a tailor-made installation that has been designed to meet their needs. A completely turnkey solution will automate and optimise production, enabling growth in a modular way. This means that a food manufacturer will not have to adapt their processes to suit a pre-made solution – instead, the opposite happens.


Aside from the obvious considerations over reduced costs, working with a single provider also means interfacing with only one company, who will have complete knowledge of their system, and who has designed, built and commissioned it. A system is really only turnkey if it takes into consideration all aspects of the productive context it operates in. Ideally, materials

Suzanne Callander asked two different equipment suppliers some questions to find out more about the benefits of choosing a ‘turnkey’ production solution

This not only allows extreme precision in the set-up of each operation (with management of aspects such as temperature and atmosphere), but it can also be n constantly adjusted on the basis of the data provided by the system itself.


Q: What is your interpretation of ‘turnkey’ in relation to today’s equipment solutions for the confectionery industry?


AB: I believe it is vital to take a holistic approach, which, more than the simple supply of equipment solutions, results in a real partnership that focuses on the customer’s product, right from the earliest stages of its creation. The customer is supported not only in the technical definition of the project, but in the whole technological development proposal – in our case, right up to and including consideration around the packaging materials being used. The confectionery world requires a good understanding of


the end product and a technological competence that favours a consultative approach by suppliers. We need to give customers the opportunity to focus on the development of their own products, leaving them with the best possible solution to achieve this.


SM: A turnkey solution is a solution that makes the user independent. What does this mean in practice? Firstly, the process needs to be covered from beginning to end, which in CEPI’s case cover everything from storing to dosing. Secondly, the builder’s technological offer should be diversified in order to support any materials and processes the user wishes to include, without the need to involve another supplier. The machine builder also needs to possess all expertise needed to design, build
