Feature: Sensor technology

6 7

How much space is available to mount the sensor, and what are the restrictions around it?

Tis can oſten be overlooked, but if you are trying to fit a sensor into a small space (perhaps as a retrofit or upgrade), knowing how much space is available can oſten influence the sensor type. Sometimes it is possible to position the sensor farther away from the target than first thought.

What is the ambient environment for sensor and target? Tese can oſten be different.

By answering this question, the supplier will have a better idea of the sensor technology to recommend. However, there could be more than one option available. Make sure you think about the location of the sensor head as well as the controller, if applicable. Key factors here are ambient temperature, environment cleanliness (e.g., dust, steam, oil, etc.), pressure or vacuum, since all these affect

measurement performance and sensor accuracy.

Brand New Oscilloscopes with UltraVision III Technology

What quantity is required? Is it single or multiple measurement on single/multiple target(s),

required for a single or multiple machines or a combination of these? Leſt unanswered this question could have serious implications on the success of the project. Having just one sensor is easy to integrate, but if you are measuring multiple positions at once, then synchronisation and connectivity are important factors. What output signal you need is also important (e.g., analogue, digital, fieldbus, etc.).

Do you have a budget in mind for the task? Answering Question 2 will help

Extended 20 GSa/s Chipset

define a budget. However, if the required solution requires more money than initially thought, can it still be justified? An incorrectly-specified sensor chosen

to meet a budget may be wasted money if it doesn’t measure as required. Before setting a budget, talk to the sensor supplier to determine what is a realistic spend. Te supplier will always aim to work to that, and recommend different solutions if the budget limit might result in a compromised sensor selection – ultimately, you have to determine what is the best decision for your company over the long term.

III TECHNOLOGY

When do you need a working solution? Most catalogue sensors are

available from stock, but most suppliers can oſten customise parts for a specification, for example by providing you with a non- standard measurement range, target-specific calibrations or different cable lengths. Sensors can be bespoke, but it takes time, so it’s best to discuss all your requirements with the supplier in plenty of time to help find the right solution, rather than settle one that “fits” into a shorter timescale.
