MOVING & LIFTING

I

n dynamic manufacturing situations where production needs vary, flexibility is vital. There is no form of mechanical handling that beats an overhead crane. They can access the entire factory workshop area, or service key workstations depending on what the production system dictates. In every case, there is no shop floor clutter or traffic.

DESIGNING TO MEET DEMANDS previously possible, as the speed of calculation Every manufacturing situation is different. Factors such as bay width, roof pitch, structural loading and available height will vary. Production demands will differ; such as safe working load, travel distance and speed of forward motion, lateral movement and lift. Sometimes special equipment may be required to handle non- standard loads or there may be other needs such as extreme precision in lifting and placement. Optimising crane design to give the best performance in any factory space starts with a detailed examination of all these requirements, followed by complex calculations to find the best technical and commercial answer. Over 75 years, Street Crane has accumulated real- world expertise that has now been embodied in a new design tool, Eazycrane. Self-financed and developed in-house over five years by a dedicated team of 25 Street Crane engineers, working alongside a team of computer programmers from Insiso, Eazycrane cuts through the complexities.

removes the cost barriers.

Saving even more time, the system also produces detailed manufacturing drawings, quotations and parts lists, streaming data into the manufacturing system and supply chain to turbocharge the whole delivery cycle. This all contributes to giving the factory owner the best possible crane, in the shortest time and most cost effectively.

GOING GLOBAL CRANES IN MINUTES

Whatever the demands of the manufacturing situation, Eazycrane interrogates and evaluates the options at breakneck speeds. Given a crane’s expected operational parameters along with the

Eazycrane has provided a boost to Street Crane’s international business. In the UK the company supply over 400 complete cranes per year. The weight, bulk and shipping cost of structures means that the factory crane business is national and regional. Therefore, Street Crane has built partnerships with 120 mid-sized overseas crane makers serving their local markets in 48 countries. To these companies, Street Crane supplies hoists, travelling equipment and controls – the higher value and more easily shipped elements of the crane.

Street Crane is now making Eazycrane available to all its international distributors, enabling them to design and produce crane structures at speed and to the highest standards. The programme can produce drawings and specifications in

production space and building attributes, the software will design structural crane components and select the most appropriate hoists, travelling equipment and controls from a vast database of pre-engineered elements. A process that used to take many hours, perhaps days, can now be completed in minutes. This opens up the possibility to run quickly ‘what if’ scenarios to fine-tune the crane design much more than was

metric or imperial measurements and complies to European and North American technical codes. The system can even take account of the standard steel plate sizes available in different countries, so that crane beams and other structures can be fabricated economically.

The entire manufacturing process is

synchronised, even if the structure is fabricated by a partner in Dubai, the hoists and other travelling equipment are being made in Derbyshire.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

A properly specified overhead crane will provide decades or more of service, but like all mechanical equipment they require periodic servicing and replacement of wear parts. As every crane is designed specifically to its application this could pose a problem, so Street Crane is now working on a parts portal extension for Eazycrane. This will simplify parts ordering, with the input of the unique crane serial number generating a full bill- of-materials for that specific crane. Items such as ropes, rope guides, brake parts and limit switches can then be ordered with confidence, knowing that they are exact matches for the original equipment

AN EXPORT MODEL FOR OTHERS The relationship between Street Crane and the partner network is mutually beneficial. Overseas sales have enabled Street Crane to build a dedicated hoist works providing the benefits of scale and modern manufacturing methods to produce a product that is technically superior and more competitive globally.
