ANALYSIS: SMART SECURITY Smart Home Technology

Disrupting the norm with smarter security

30 S

“As consumers are slowly making their way back to the office, they are beginning to investigate what security is available for their homes without these systems looking like something out of a Black Mirror episode,” says Ring’s Dave Ward.

ecurity cameras offer customers peace of mind while they are out and about. It also might be that they do not want a security camera and prefer to have only an intercom

so they are able to greet people who come to their door. Ring offers an intercom system which allows consumers to do this. “The idea for Ring Intercom was really driven by the observation that so many homes in Europe have intercom handsets for access that function the same way they did 30 years ago,” says Dave Ward, Managing Director UK, Europe and International at Ring. “We could improve the experience by providing an instant upgrade that is easy to install and does not require modifications to the existing device or the building, making it ideal for apartment owners and renters.” The Ring

Intercom provides real-time

alerts straight to the consumer’s smartphone whenever the intercom at their building entrance is pressed. Then they can speak to whoever is there and buzz them in using Two- Way Talk and Remote Unlock in the Ring app. There’s also the Auto-Verify feature, which gives users the option to enable keyless access to services and visitors they trust, so they can buzz themselves in. Auto-Verify for Amazon Deliveries offers time-bound access to drivers once verified, to securely drop of Amazon packages inside the building!

“We are passionate about disrupting the norm and iterating on our products and features to make them faster, better, and smarter,” adds Mr Ward. “We also want to bring our customers what they want and need, giving them affordable solutions that are customisable, easy to install and use, and always improving. Ring Intercom upgrades existing intercom systems, to offer increased peace of mind and convenience to apartment dwellers.” Mr Ward also explains how Ring Intercoms

are working to help communities be safer places. “As part of our commitment to making neighbourhoods safer, we are constantly looking at ways to improve the safety and security of homes around the world,” he says. Ring also offers its popular Ring Video Doorbell Plus, which features a 1539p HD head-to-toe field-of-view camera. This will enable the consumer to see exactly who is standing at their door trying to gain access. Something that is missing from modern technology is the ability to switch it off and give the consumer privacy. With the second generation Ring Indoor Camera it offers the user the ability to turn off audio and video with the addition of a manual privacy cover; this is a small device that fits over the camera lens. The camera also comes with night vision, motion zones and advanced motion detection. A bonus to any security system is having features that allow the consumer the chance to

personalise inputs and outputs. Mr Ward explains that they “have always focused on increasing the ability for our customers to be always home.” He goes on: “With Ring Intercom, we saw

how different the home setup was for people across Europe and worked backwards from the customer’s need to modernise existing buildings systems and add Ring features customers know and love.”

It has become clear that the home security industry is an area with consumers at the forefront of new developments. Ring offers an alternative to other products available in the industry at a low cost, just as consumers are feeling the pinch from the cost-of-living crisis. Mr Ward explains that “with this product, we can give apartment-dwellers the same security and peace of mind as home-dwellers, offering an affordable solution that is easy to install and tailored to your home’s unique setup.”
