FOCUS PACKAGING, MACHINERY & LABELLING CHALLENGE READY MEAL FATIGUE
food manufacturers is our legacy of bespoke design and our close relationships with tooling manufactures. As you hunt for alternatives to plastic,
whether you choose aluminium, glass or paper-based products, you need a supplier that has the insight to produce the right product for your food — without promising the earth, but failing to deliver. The design of new products at Advanta
Ready meal fatigue is real. Supermarket shelves are lined with products of the same size, shapes and colour scheme. But, it’s hard to blame food manufacturers, as they contend with serious challenges. Here, Miguel Campos, export sales manager for foil tray manufacturer, Advanta explains how bespoke packaging can combat the fatigue

alf way through 2018 and 2017 predictions of challenges for the food
sector are starting to leave a mark. The first, and most obvious, is the war against plastic. News about the devastating impact of plastic on the environment and steps governments are taking to mitigate the problem, is everywhere. Even the United Nations (UN) is taking
an interest in the issue, as reported by the BBC in June 2018. The Galapagos will ban single-use plastics, Sri Lanka will prohibit the use of styrofoam and China is insisting on biodegradable bags. The UK also plans to ban single use plastics, like straws and plastic cutlery. It won’t be long until ready meal manufacturers also feel pressure to reduce plastic use. On top of this, food manufactures are also planning for Brexit. The uncertainty surrounding Brexit,
and the possibility of Britain leaving without a deal, is causing great anxiety to both British exporters and importers of food products. In fact, senior civil servants have drawn
up a doomsday scenario that hints at ‘Brexit Armageddon’, which could see the UK experience food shortages within two weeks of leaving the EU. This raises

worries for food manufacturers about the practicalities of importing ingredients, exporting products and how Brexit will affect their bottom line. But, in an environment of political uncertainty and environmental challenges, how can bespoke packaging help? In this heightened competitive
market, it has never been more important for pre-prepared meals to stand out on the supermarket shelf. As consumer demand for environmentally sustainable packaging is at a high, now is the time for manufacturers to assess packaging options. However, selecting the bespoke route is
only useful if you work with a supplier with the resources, skills and experience to handle the project from start to finish. This includes knowledge of the limitations of your chosen material and the machine tooling capabilities needed to manufacture the packaging.
THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB At Advanta, for example, we have 64 process lines and over 420 precision tools on hand, allowing us to manufacture 700 unique packaging products. However, the true benefit to
With the right supplier, using bespoke packaging to house your food products can be simple
is a team effort for this exact reason. We involve product designers, tool managers, the scheduling team and even representatives from the manufacturer in the design process. So, by the time a client sees the first draft of a technical drawing, we have considered the limitations of machinery, tooling and material — as well as the manufacturing capacity to provide an honest solution. By working with a supplier that can do
this, a massive burden is lifted. There is an element of risk to trying something new, but if your supplier can prove they have considered things from every angle, there is no need to worry.
CAPABILITY AND CAPACITY Design skills and experience are just part of the puzzle. You must also consider whether your supplier has the capacity to deliver to your schedule. It is easy to assess the physical
capabilities of a supplier by visiting their manufacturing facility or by asking questions about how much is processed in their facility. For a reputable supplier, this should be an easy question to answer. For example, at Advanta we can process up to 4.2 tonnes of aluminium per day, per press. We also have an inhouse maintenance team to keep downtime to a minimum. We also recommend asking your supplier
to incorporate your production forecasts into their own systems to make sure they never miss your deadlines. It is something that should be a simple task for a supplier that is using a modern management resource process (MRP) system. With the right supplier, using bespoke
packaging to house your food products can be as simple as opting for an off the shelf solution. In today’s food manufacturing environment, there are plenty of challenges for manufacturers to contend with, packaging that stands out from the crowd doesn’t have to be one of them.
