FEATURE ENERGY MANAGEMENT

STORING & SAVING exploring voltage optimisation

as overnight, and uses it during the peak, more expensive periods in order to avoid the DUoS tariffs accompanying the high demand periods. Energy storage solutions also serve as

an energy asset that is connected to the grid and therefore offer the capability to participate in Demand Side Response (DSR) services. DSR is a tool used by the system operator, which rewards end users for utilising the energy in a flexible and intelligent manner through temporarily reducing demand, supplying energy to the grid, or increasing consumption when the grid suffers over- supply. The system operator then uses these reserves to ensure it remains within its operational limits by balancing the supply and demand of energy to ensure a constant supply can be delivered. DSR affords new revenue opportunities and builds a good business case for implementing such technology.

Dr Alex Madapittas, CEO of Powerstar, discusses how energy efficiency technologies, such as energy storage and voltage optimisation can be an asset for the manufacturing sector across Ireland

ue to heightened focus on sustainability in addition to

Ireland’s difficulty in cutting emissions in line with the stated objective of reducing carbon emissions by at least 80 per cent by 2050, energy-intensive industries are pressurised to reduce energy consumption. Consequently, the challenge is for

energy-intensive industries to implement solutions that reduce energy consumption and improve the sustainability of businesses and industries, whilst being non-intrusive to operations and success. The need for investing in modern energy

efficiency technology which allows for intelligent use of energy is highlighted through the ESB network strategy which claims: “The networks of the future will critically rely on high speed communications and advanced IT systems. This enhanced capability will allow us to meet future complex system challenges.”

SECURING THE SUPPLY THROUGH UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS) Concerns over the UK’s departure from the EU has led to fears the energy network for the Republic of Ireland will be less reliable due to its reliance on

imported energy, this is highlighted as at certain times it has been cheaper to import electricity from Britain rather than generate electricity in Ireland. This leaves the Republic of Ireland’s energy network exposed to the outcome of Brexit whilst Northern Ireland suffers from the decreasing supply security from the UK network, which saw the total unsupplied energy in the UK increase from 20.02MWh in 2015-16 to 105.01MWh in 2016-17. In the event of a supply issue, such as a

blackout or brownout, the UPS capabilities of leading energy storage solutions allow the system to automatically support the load, often within milliseconds. This seamless backup protects the company’s site-wide operations in the event of an energy- related failure which could have damaging effects to a manufacturer’s finances and reputation. Cost savings which arise from peak

DUoS shaving offer the most immediate benefits to manufacturers as the savings they provide can be significant and start from day one. These savings occur when a manufacturer utilises an energy storage solution to store energy which is generated during cheaper periods, such

ENSURING ENERGY REDUCTION WITH VOLTAGE REGULATION Despite the growing importance of energy storage, with the global energy storage market predicted to rise to 125GW by 2030, it should not be understated how effective existing technology such as voltage optimisation is. Voltage optimisation reduces the

oversupply of voltage, so it runs at a level better suited to the design characteristics of electrical equipment which reduces unnecessary wear and tear and provides longevity. Leading voltage optimisation provider

Powerstar has patented the integration of its voltage optimisation solutions with its energy storage solution, Powerstar VIRTUE. This has resulted in an energy storage solution which provides energy optimisation through the combination of voltage regulation and energy storage. Through Powerstar’s network of global

partners, it delivers a concept-to- completion service based around the unique challenges of each customer. Their thorough assessment includes analysing a building’s energy supply to understand which technology and specification will best meet a customer’s needs and ensure a future-proof investment with maximum value. Powerstar also provides remote monitoring capabilities which allow for greater visibility of energy assets, and the ability to view the energy profile remotely, which is vital in a manufacturing setting to reduce maintenance costs and detect issues before they arise resulting in more efficient operations, as emphasised through Industry 4.0.
