RANGE REVIEW: TILES & TILING

NEW TILES ARE TERRA-HOTTA I

As Autumn approaches and thoughts naturally turn to cosying up interior spaces, one trend looks set to dominate according to new research for independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore: terracotta.

nterest in ‘terracotta DIY’ has exploded as summer draws to a close, with Pinterest reporting a 10,000% monthly

change in searches. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, says: “Terracotta’s richness and earthy hue means it is ideal for warming up interior schemes as we head into winter months.

“As people move away from cool greys and clinical whites, the rustic charm of terracotta is driving interest.”

While terracotta tiles look amazing, they are porous by nature which means they absorb liquids and are prone to staining. However, today’s terracotta-effect tiles have the same great looks as the real deal, but none of the disadvantages. Abbas says: “They’re versatile enough to work in all manner of house styles and every bit as beautiful as natural fired earth. And our range of terracotta-effect tiles are made from porcelain, they’re also highly practical, easy to live with and suitable for use with underfloor heating.”

Fireclay Light Hex

Pairing the simple beauty of natural terracotta with an on-trend hexagonal shape, these tiles will give your home a stylish look that’s full of natural charm. They’re ideal for both rustic and modern interiors alike, with relatively subtle shade variation compared to

other terracotta-style designs. Made from high-quality Spanish porcelain, they’re remarkable easy to live with, won’t stain over time and are waterproof as well. This means they can be used on high-traffic floors as well as in wet areas such as bathrooms or splashbacks.

Using these tiles on the floor?

You’ll find that plenty of wall tiles pair extremely well - white subway tiles will tone in nicely, while green tiles will offer a more statement look. A matching subway tile is also available, which is great for adding some herringbone style to your space.

Riad Star Cotto Tile Inspired by the dreamy ‘star and cross’ tiles you’d find in a Moroccan palace, these tiles will help create a floor that’s the star of the show.

With their undulating surface and earthy colouring, they have all the rustic character and charm of the handmade originals, without the sky-high price tag. They feature two different shapes, which interlock together to form a striking geometric pattern. And best of all, these tiles are made from porcelain. This means their welcoming warmth can be enjoyed in any room at home, from bathrooms to busy hallways.

Croft Cotto Hexagon Tile As the name suggests, these hexagon tiles are full of clay, sand and terracotta hues, evoking the feel of a rustic retreat. They have the look and feel of handmade ceramics - with a lush natural texture, oodles of tonal variation from piece to piece and a gorgeous, aged aesthetic.

NEW ADDITIONS TO HEXAGONAL TILE COLLECTIONS

Venetian Terrazzo – reflecting the artisan style seen in the ancient palaces of Italy – is the latest tile collection from Ceramique Internationale.

The collection of 250mm x 216mm hexagonal wall and floor tiles by Italian manufacturer Marca Corona includes two colours – ‘Warm Beige’ and ‘Cool Grey’. Offered in a marble/stone effect matt finish, Venetian Terrazzo porcelain tiles emulate the expertly crafted work of 16th century artisans, who used multi-coloured

marble chips set into clay to create the luxurious tiles which are feature prominently in the palaces of historic Venice. However, advanced printing technology means they deliver the durability and easy maintenance of modern porcelain. Director of Ceramique

Internationale, Peter Vann, says: “The opulence of Venetian Terrazzo, in visually striking repeat hexagonal patterns, creates a truly palatial ambience in any space. By grouping together these five-sided

Italian glazed porcelain tiles you can create the on-trend and distinctive honeycomb effect. “We now have a large range of hexagonal collections by Marca Corona and these latest additions will create a stunning backdrop on walls and floors in a bathroom, kitchen, conservatory or hallway.”

And despite the artisanal styling, these tiles are made from premium Spanish porcelain so they’re suitable for any wall or floor at home. Unlike natural terracotta, Croft doesn’t require any sealing or special care and has an R10 slip rating, for added peace of mind underfoot.

Classic meets contemporary Traditional earthy tones of terracotta are complemented by a pretty indented pattern in eye-catching white gloss glaze. Their design draws upon historic Moroccan art forms and this antique aesthetic is enhanced by the gentle variations in colour. However, the tiles are created from modern porcelain. So you get to enjoy the look and feel of natural terracotta in tiles that are low maintenance and long lasting. Style them on their own for a striking splashback or combine with the plain Souk Cotto tiles for an elegant design. No matter how you decide to decorate with them, these tiles will make a lasting impression. Please note while they’re made from porcelain, these Souk tiles really do look just like handmade terracotta. There are slight differences in size between individual tiles and as such, your grout joints won’t be perfect. This is part of the intended aesthetic and will give your floor a beautiful artisanal character.
