Educating the market

Now that most of us have returned from our summer holidays and the kids have gone back to school, it’s that time of year when people start to think about decorating and giving their homes a refresh. Like many others, the majority of my recent DIY projects have been outside during the summer months, despite the poor weather, and now I’m preparing to take on all the indoor jobs I’ve been putting off. One such task has been re-grouting a tiled bathroom floor. This tiled floor is upstairs and despite having a membrane underneath, the tiles do move slightly so require a flexible grout. Having purchased what I thought was a suitable grout and applied it, I was pretty happy with the result. However, just a few days later the grout started

to crack and work loose leaving a gritty mess on the bathroom floor. So, what went wrong? Well, it seems that the grout isn’t quite as ‘flexible’ as it states and my tiles probably move a bit too much, leading to this disaster. I’m now considering using flexible mastic instead, which will hopefully solve the problem, unless anyone has any better ideas? This experience got me thinking about how many other DIYers have to tackle problems caused by either their own mistakes, having to put right someone else’s, or just by simply having the wrong product? This is where the industry has an important part to play in ensuring products are properly labelled, advertised and reviewed, so that the consumer is fully aware of the product’s capabilities, and aren’t misled into wasting their money and buying the wrong thing. Retailers play a key role in this too, by offering the help and advice that provides DIYers with the knowledge and confidence required to take on their projects, get a satisfying result, and hopefully keep them coming back for more.
