Growing with Gardena at Chelsea Flower Show

Leading gardening brand, Gardena, recently unveiled its interactive 2024 Chelsea Flower Show Garden at the event, which focused on growth and resilience, showcasing the importance of native planting, water harvesting and clever watering solutions. The garden was designed in collaboration with sustainability content creator and eco-designer, Lynne Lambourne for a third year.

Providing an interactive experience for at-tendees, the garden aims to educate and inspire people to re-think the plants they use, and how to care for them in a more sustainable and resilient way. Visitors to the world’s most famous five-day flower show were able to attend the Gardena stand and get hands-on with products, learn about the ways in which they can become more resilient in their gardening practices, and take home a piece of Chelsea by

planting their very own pumpkin seed.

The garden showcased a harmonious blend of nature and innovation. Central to its design

BHETA’S age verification campaign regarding bladed items leads to Royal Mail climb-down

A two-month campaign by BHETA on postal services’ age verification policies, reference the delivery of bladed items, has led to a climb-down by Royal Mail on its original proposal to cease such services. Such a move would potentially have financially crippled many UK housewares sellers of legitimate products such as kitchen knives, penknives and cutlery.

4 DIY WEEK MAY 2024 Royal Mail had originally

proposed the termination of its current low-cost age-verified service, which would have left smaller UK suppliers and retailers with no financially viable alternative means of delivering legitimate product safely to age- verified customers. Alternative delivery companies either charge prohibitive rates for age verification or impose minimum quantity criteria, which are too

high for smaller suppliers and retailers to use. BHETA was made aware of the disastrous possible impact for the UK home improvement and enhancement industries two months ago. It immediately communicated with Adrian Baker - UK Products Director Royal Mail and raised the issue in a meeting with the Minister for Policing and OFCOM at the Home Office, as well as providing members with

fixes to big renovations – easy and affordable. easyToolhire has an extensive network of depots across the UK and specialises in quality tool hire and equipment rental at a reasonable price and at the touch of a button. wilko.com’s new tool

hire service – powered by easyToolhire – is a significant step forward in the equipment rental brand’s journey.

Clothing &

catering style it out in GCA BoT April figures

the means to lobby their MPs on the subject.

Royal Mail has now backed down and pledged to continue its age-verified postal delivery service, along with a new policy that from 7th May, it will no longer handle any newly prohibited items, this placing clear distance between legitimate bladed products for household use and other items.

The Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) Barometer of Trade (BoT) for April is out now and shows clothing and catering leading the way when compared to the same month last year. There was also a positive, 3.77%, year-to-date variance, but 10 of the 13 categories recorded were down when likened to April 2023 according to figures from the organisation’s member garden centres. Peter Burks, GCA CEO, explains: “As expected, with Easter having fallen in March this year, the April figures do not look very encouraging and definitely back-up the sentiments I heard on my visits to our members. “Our smaller centres did much better than the larger ones, actually managing to be up a little bit, but overall, the average was down by 5%. “However, it’s not all doom and gloom as anecdotal evidence from our members suggests May has already started off well, boosted by the much better weather. We’ve had one reasonably good Bank Holiday and hope the next one to come will be even nicer.” Excluding the miscellaneous section (+21.33%), the GCA’s top performing category in April 2024 was clothing, up +14.43%, when compared to the same month in 2023. This was followed by catering +13.05%.
