INDUSTRY COMMENT: BHETA
MAKING IT ZERO COULD FINALLY GET EASIER
With sustainability and carbon footprint measurement an inevitable challenge for all UK suppliers, and especially for those trading with multiples, BHETA has been encouraging its members to get ahead of the curve and turn the ‘burden’ of compliance into a compelling sales advantage. After all retailers are just as obligated to achieve the required standards as suppliers, so a genuine and verifiable sustainability pitch will be received with enthusiasm, says Will Jones, chief operating officer of BHETA.
I
know for certain that this is possible, but equally acknowledge that it may seem considerably
easier said than done! Getting the compliance right in the first place – and then reporting on it correctly – can certainly be daunting, and while burying heads in the sand is the wrong response, the question of how remains challenging for many.
Join BHETA and the ‘Make It Zero’ programme Thanks to the ground-breaking DIY sector Scope 3 Strategy & Roadmap first launched at the Global DIY Summit in 2024 along with the introduction of the supplier task force, and now updated at the 2025 summit, the ‘Make it Zero’ programme is now entering a new phase to decarbonise the DIY sector, where attention turns to implementation.
As
legislation begins to take effect, it is vital that industry comes together and embraces a collaborative new approach. Specifically, ‘Make it Zero’ is the brainchild of EDRA / GHIN (the European DIY Retail Association and the Global Home Improvement Network)
in association with
consultants, Ricardo PLC, and it plans to make decarbonisation compliance easier and less costly. The principle of the programme, to which BHETA has signed up, verifies a company’s commitment to carbon net zero, and aims to make carbon reduction cheaper, quicker, and simpler for retailers and suppliers.
For suppliers, the ‘Make It
Zero’ services will enable them to streamline processes and reduce costs significantly. Suppliers will be able to use the ‘Make It Zero’ templates and technical support to complete Green House Gas reports in-house, eliminating the need for

costly third-party consultants. A key goal of the project is for suppliers to create fewer Green House Gas reports per product, each of which are accepted by multiple retailers, saving significant time and cost. The latest announcement is the launch of a sector-recognised brand that members can use to showcase their participation with the programme. This will demonstrate to customers and wider stakeholders that members are investing in the Make it Zero programme, and that they have access to all the tools and resources and are developing the knowledge and skills required to transition their operations and products to net zero.
The benefits for BHETA members As a result of BHETA’s sign up, BHETA members can access the benefits at a 20% discount on the scaled joining fee which ranges from 400 to 15,000 Euros depending on turnover.
As the leading voice in the home and garden improvement sector, BHETA
believes that
decarbonisation is a moral imperative as well as the basis of increasingly demanding legislative compliance. Equally, however, if we can make that compliance no less rigorous and meaningful, but more straightforward to achieve, then the commercial opportunity of achievement becomes ever greater and more exciting. ‘Make It Zero’ can help members futureproof their businesses, demonstrate environmental leadership, boost reputation, and create compelling sales pitches. Specifically, it makes the net zero journey more
accessible
and achievable. Quite apart from BHETA’s 20% discount, members who sign up can: Utilise templates and technical support to complete GHG reports in-house, eliminating the need for costly third-party consultants.
