DIY WEEK AWARDS 2024 WINNERS DIY Product of the Year

Crown Retail – Quick Dry Eggshell paint

Crown has completely overhauled its trim and preparation range to create a more consumer focused, easy-to-shop offering that is more efficient for retailers to stock and merchandise. Crown Retail Quick Dry Eggshell is a new and improved, water-based formulation that has quicker drying times, and is resistant to yellowing for longer lasting whiteness, reducing the need for redecoration. The switch to a water-based formulation means that there is a 99%

reduction in VOCs emitted by the paint, and a 34% CO2 footprint reduction. It now also carries Crown’s well-loved breatheasy® 99% solvent free mark which lets users know that they can decorate their homes safely in the knowledge they are limiting their exposure to airborne triggers of asthma and allergy.

The new tough and durable finish can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, across wood, metal and PVC – key USPs vs competitor products. Improvements to the packaging design saw the livery aligned with the Crown core Walls & Ceilings range. A new hierarchy of message has also ensured clear navigation in a complex category. The can quickly indicates what substrates the product can be used on and the special feature of the product, its quick dry property is indicated with handy iconography to differentiate vs other products in the range.

Sustainability Initiative of the Year Crown Paints

We enable our customers to make more sustainable choices, and scrutinise those we make as a business, in order to reduce our impact on the environment. At the end of 2023, we launched ‘Project Possible’, an ambitious new environmental and social strategy that brings a singular focus to all of our efforts to make a positive difference. Project Possible spans five key areas and runs through our entire business and beyond, setting clear goals for all stakeholders to embrace and realise. As a central part of the project, we have committed to several ambitious near-term milestones that will see us transform the impact of our business on the environment. However, we are by no means beginning from a standing start. In the past year, we have made a string of major sustainability achievements. These include: 100% of our owned operations are run on renewable energy from certified sources; we’ve invested £2.2 million in achieving carbon neutrality by 2026; we recycle more than 1 million paint cans every year through our Crown Can Back scheme; we’re the first paint manufacturer to use 100% recycled packaging in products; and both of our UK manufacturing sites now have dedicated recycling centres. Our overall ambition is to radically improve our environmental and social impact, so that our company, customers and colleagues are able to thrive – now and into the future. With Project Possible, we have set ambitious targets that will make

this a reality. - We’ve committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% before 2026 and to halve them by 2030.

The judges said: “This product is an easy-to-understand, highly

effective solution for everyone from novice DIYers to seasoned decorators that will prove valuable to retailers in driving their paint category growth.”

- We will achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2026. This includes our factories in Darwen and Hull, our offices and our network of Crown Decorating Centres in the UK and Ireland.

- Also by 2026, we are aiming to be a zero waste to landfill business. To achieve this, we’re implementing a comprehensive approach to recycling and circularity across our operations.

- We have made sustainability an explicit key driver in all product development and innovation activities, right across the business, making us genuinely ‘planet-first’ in our thinking. The judges said: “Crown’s ‘Project Possible’ is a very comprehensive,

thorough and top-down evaluation of business operations to achieve well-deserved sustainability credentials. This is a superb corporate social responsibility strategy that deserves much credit. Progress in action!”
