TOOLS ON TEST
HANDS ON A
n air compressor and nail gun might be considered a little too advanced and out of reach for the average
DIYer, but with its latest starter kit, Kyocera Senco is bringing the tool within reach of the consumer, thanks to its attractive price, ease of use and great features. We’ve been using the tool for a few months now and have found it a very handy addition to the workshop in more ways than one.
Kit contents I’ve often thought about investing in an air compressor for my workshop as I could think of a few uses for it, including spray painting, tyre inflating, dusting off and, as supplied in this AC4504 kit from Senco, with a nail gun. But I’ve always been put off by the price, concerns about which to choose and performance, not to mention the noise. So when Kyocera Senco offered me the chance to try their latest low noise compressor that promises great performance at a low volume, I jumped at the chance. The
AC4504 Low Noise
Compressor Kit comes in quite a compact package, yet includes a generous range of accessories. These include the Senco FinishPro18Mg 18g brad nailer, a pack of brads, a decent pair of eye protecting glasses, good quality air hose and connectors and of course the compressor itself.
On opening the box and lifting out the contents, the first thing you notice is the quality feel and excellent finish of all the parts. The
Senco FinishPro18Mg 18g brad nailer not only looks great, but is also a heavy-duty tool that seems like it’s been built to last. Made from good quality materials, the nailer’s soft touch grip, balance and reasonable weight make it feel really good in the hand and should help reduce fatigue when using it for
long periods or in awkward
positions. The supplied Senco eye protectors are also good quality, as are the selection of 18 gauge galvanised brad nails supplied in the kit to help you get started.
Low noise compressor
But the star of this set is undoubtedly the Senco AC4504 oil free air compressor. This is a substantial piece of kit that boasts all the features you’d expect from a high end compressor, such as a delivery of up to 28l/min of air at six bar, eight bar maximum pressure, providing 0.33hp from its four litre tank, and all at a very low noise level of just 58db, the sound level of normal conversation. With the average noise output of a typical compressor reaching around 97dB, users can find this an uncomfortable noise level to cope with for extended periods of time. Recognising this issue, Senco – with

This month we’ve been continuing our long-term test of the AC4504 Low Noise Compressor Starter Kit from Kyocera Senco, which is proving to be a very handy piece of equipment to have around the workshop.
one supplied in the kit is a Senco FinishPro18Mg 18g brad nailer, so that’s what we’ve mainly used with it. This is a very handy tool for nailing down floorboards, fixing cladding or constructing gates or fences to name just a few. We actually used it to fix some hardboard panels to the inside of a shed roof to give it a neat ceiling as part of a refurbishment project and it made the job much faster and easier than traditional nailing or screwing. Even though I was reaching up to secure the ceiling panels for some time, light weight and comfortable handling of the nailer, coupled with the low noise from the compressor, meant that I didn’t get too tired and was able to complete the job very efficiently The nailer is very simple to load a magazine of

the AC4504 Low Noise Compressor – has significantly reduced the vibration and noise output to a much quieter 58dB, making it much more pleasant to use. It also means that, since noise levels are no longer a barrier, the compressor can be more readily situated directly at its place of use. Weighing just 11kg, the compressor
is also easy to lift and move around, helped by the easy grip top handle. Despite its relatively light weight, the compressor still feels solid and well built with all the main switches easily accessible and clearly labelled, making it very simple to use. Rubber feet keep the machine steady when in operation and the combination of solidity, reduced vibration and low noise mean the compressor can be used anywhere.
In use
The compressor is supplied with a good quality blue air hose and two different size adapters that allow it to attach to a range of different air tools. As already mentioned, the
brads and
once connected to the compressor is powered up and ready to go. The instruction manual is very straightforward to follow, so even amateur DIYers will soon feel confident using the tool and, after some practice, will become quite proficient at using it in no time.
The verdict… This latest Senco compressor and brad nailer kit is another well-built product that’s made to work hard. With compressors being a noisy, but often essential component of the job, Senco, a leading expert in fastening technology, has developed the AC4504 Low Noise Compressor, which is ideal for use in confined spaces or DIY jobs in the home. It’s great for use with brad nailers and light and medium staplers, but can also be hooked up to other air tools, making it even more versatile and a very useful addition to anyone’s tool kit. With a recommended retail price of just £249 for the whole kit, it offers the consumer good value and brings the air compressor and nail gun in line with the price of other power tools.
