Letting the outside in

As we all enjoy a hot and largely dry summer, attention has turned to the gardening and outdoor segment as everyone spends more time outside. Whilst the lack of rain does pose some obvious problems for gardeners, knowing the weather will be good and being able to plan outdoor activities is certainly a bonus for others. As the UK climate gradually changes and we get used to longer and hotter summers, the topic of extending the home outside is gaining momentum and becoming more credible. Where the garden was once mainly used for relaxing and entertaining for a couple of months a year, it’s now becoming part of our everyday living space thanks to the addition of verandas,

summerhouses, garden offices and even bars, to mention just a few. Of course this trend has been helped along by the Covid pandemic, when we were all forced to stay at home and make the most of whatever space we had, so you could say this is one positive that came out of that particular crisis. The knock-on effect for the DIY industry is that more people are willing to tackle larger outside jobs, such as building patios, barbecues and outdoor buildings than ever before, which is opening up new opportunities for retailers. In this issue we look at some of these trends in more detail and also bring you a report from the recent Glee show where these developments and sector growth were clear for all to see. As our climate changes and evolves it does unfortunately bring with it some downsides, including the proliferation of unwanted pests, which is something we will all have to get used to. Customers are therefore going to be looking at ways to tackle this problem in the most efficient, humane and environmentally-friendly way, something else we are looking at in this issue and yet another way in which DIY retailers can help by stocking the right products.
