P8 / NEWS EXTRA
The industry comments on what our new prime minister, Boris Johnson, should be focusing on.
“It should have made every manager ask what kind of leader they want to be”
Founded in 1874
We always try to serve up a good portion of inspiration in DIY Week and, this latest issue is no different, with advice about and top tips on merchandising, a closer look at how technology is transforming the decorating market, plus a presentation from the 2019 Global DIY Summit that really impacted me personally. The talk in question was given by Ace Hardware CEO and president John Venhuizen, who used his keynote speech to focus on leadership and what he described as ‘the heart of a leader’. Now, John is an enigmatic American businessman, so try and picture that presence on stage when you read my coverage because the delivery via flat words on page, quoting phrases like “what a gas” and “high five” probably don’t quite do it justice. However, I have tried my best to capture the essence of what he said and the important message he wanted to get across to delegates. There were anecdotes I haven’t included because you’d be trawling through pages of text if I featured it all, from a powerful story about two US navy seals, to a comical and heartwarming tale about a run-in with a police officer in Houston, Texas. Whilst there were many great speakers at this year’s summit and a lot of talk about business and how to get better at it, John’s presentation, instead, focused on the people within a company and the responsibilities to those individuals if you are a leader. That had a profound effect on me – and I know a number of people I spoke to afterwards felt the same way, saying that it really made them think.
Of course, not everyone echoed those sentiments and I did even hear the talk described as ‘self help/motivational speaker mumbo jumbo’ but draw your own conclusions from these interpretations if you will, as I genuinely think it should have made every manager in that room look at themself and ask what kind of leader and person they want to be.
