POP-UPS: REVITALISING RETAIL
Getting a foot into the retail market is increasingly difficult and, with pop-up shops commonly associated with start-ups, Kiran Grewal looks at how established businesses like Wayfair and Amazon are getting in on the act.
T
he world of retail is changing
and the
rise of pop-up stores in the industry has had many questioning the
future of shopping, and what place these temporary stores have in retail.
OnBuy.com recently conducted a pop-up shop survey, speaking to 1,424, British consumers to gauge their thoughts. The results revealed that 60% of Brits believe the biggest reason pop-up shops are becoming so popular
is that
it’s easier to discover independent/ smaller brands.
Other factors include ‘it’s fun and exciting’
(57%) and ‘it’s a
more intimate and personal way to connect with consumers’ (43%). Tellingly, when asked “do you think the concept of a pop-up shop is a good way to revitalise retail?” an overwhelming 70% of Brits agreed yes – just 13% said no. Even online retail giant, Amazon announced it will be opening 10 pop-up ‘Clicks & Mortar’ shops in various UK locations. The store at St David’s will provide more than 30 local and national e-commerce businesses with the opportunity to explore customer-facing trade for

the first time. Speaking on behalf of the St David’s Partnership – a joint venture between Landsec and Intu – Loveland senior portfolio director Russell Loveland said: “This exciting project is a fantastic example of how online retailers and brands are able to unlock new value through the use of physical retail.” Wayfair Inc, one of the largest online destinations for the home, opened its first ever pop-up showroom in the UK on August 1. The one-day only showroom offered a curated, trend-forward experience
and resident style
advisor at Wayfair, Nadia McCowan Hill, described the event as “just one example of the unique ways [Wayfair] is continuing to transform how people shop for their homes.” Set within a two-story townhouse, Wayfair’s pop-up unveiled

behind the pop-up and said: “I think our pop-up strategy in the UK is about growing awareness [of the brand], whereas in the US, it’s more about growing customer engagement – we’re opening our first brick-and-mortar store in the US this autumn. “It’s really important to be able to see the product in person and also to show with our vast selection, how you can really find unique pieces and curate it to your personal style, and that was main goal with how we wanted to style the showroom.”
Scandi Wonderland Take a sleigh ride to 2019’s must-have seasonal look – a festive feast, which takes inspiration from Scandinavia. Understated dining furniture with a streamlined silhouette creates a foundation that works all year round, while Christmas décor in red, gold and teal tones adds yuletide flair that even Santa would be proud of.
Serengeti Retreat Raw and rustic, this earthy space captures the warmth and wonder of the Serengeti. Dark wood and furniture set the scene while tactile woven touches and strong prints in burnt amber hues add their distinctive character. Safari motifs featuring majestic elephants and proud lions well and truly bring this look to life.
Retro Summer To give your summer style a retro twist, look no further than the ultimate U.S. desert resort: Palm Springs. Mid-century architecture dominates this hub of modern design, which was once the glamorous retreat of Hollywood’s most illustrious stars. This is a trend which can also flow into your outdoor style; mix vintage finds with sleek, modular outdoor seating and fun accessories. To finish the look, indulge in a plethora of faux house plants to evoke the dry, desert landscape of this hot destination.
