NEWSOME TOOLS CELEBRATES
J Newsome Tools has just celebrated its 50th year in business. Describing the early days of the business, managing director Martin Newsome said: “I joined my late father 45 years ago where we began trading from a single garage next to our home.”
The tool business continues to extend
its reach and, last year, expanded into new export markets; Lithuania, NZ, Russia & Holland, meaning that the group now exports to 12 countries, including the rest of EU and Dubai. In developing the international side of the business, Mr Newsome and his son visited Poland shortly before Christmas to appoint a new distributor/agent,

Jacek Dec. The initial connection was apparently made at last year’s Spring Fair, with “lots of emails exchanged,” said Mr Newsome, who added that, after that “the only way to move forward is as always a market visit”. Growth also came closer to home, with two further acquisitions in the UK last year, resulting in Sterling Security Products and Equine Security joining the English chain. Mr Newsome explained that they will all continue to “operate autonomously as separate entities under their own management.” People are very much at the heart of the family-run company: “We have a strong team,” said Mr Newsome

And, staff retention clearly isn’t a problem, with the average length of service amongst colleagues working at Newsome Tools around 15 years. “At least two of our sales force applied to join us even when we were not advertising and have made their career with us,” added Mr Newsome. He may have spent more than four decades in the industry but Mr Newsome still has a love for what he does and for the people he meets through the business. “The favourite part of my job is still meeting our customers,” he explained - many of whom he expects to see at the upcoming Spring Fair next month. Newsome Tools
first exhibited at the show 37 years ago and Mr Newsome says he has the same enthusiasm about meeting customers as he did at the company’s debut in 1980. It is a value he tried to instil amongst his employees. “Everyone realises who ultimately pay their wages – the most important people - our customers,” he told DIY Week. With 50 successful years of trading behind them, Mr Newsome and his team are looking forward to an exciting 2018, which includes the sponsorship of a Sheffield boxer. The family-run firm has just announced that it has entered into a sponsorship deal with light heavyweight boxer Scot Westgarth.
