Covers raises £350 for Chestnut Tree House


Staff at Covers discarded their fleeces and flocked to don their favourite festive jumper in December to raise funds for charity.


Suttons buyer joins The Tildenet Group


James Hollingworth has joined garden structure manufacturer The Tildenet Group as product development manager working across all of the company’s brands. With over 12 years’ experience in the garden sector, Mr Hollingworth has made the move from his previous role as buyer at Suttons to work on a number of new projects at Tildenet.


He said of the new role:


“Product has always been a passion of mine and I am excited to join the growing Tildenet team in this innovative role and have the opportunity to be involved with the development of products across such an extensive range.” Tildenet managing director


Andrew Downey added: “We’ve had another fantastic year at Tildenet and are delighted to have James on board to help maintain the high standards we expect of our products and develop the many exciting plans we have for 2018.” Tildenet operates across the gardening, horticulture, sporting and industrial sectors, manufacturing products from its base in Bristol. In 2015 Haxnicks joined the group, with Tildenet taking over the manufacture of its bell cloches and rootrainers.


Tile Trader’s “Tiling for a Good Cause” winner announced


Online retailer tiletrader.co.uk has revealed that Complete Kidz, a community interest company in the West Midlands, has won its competition and bagged a bespoke tiling makeover worth £500 to transform its community centre. The retailer’s “Tiling for a Good Cause” initiative called on members of the public to nominate a space in their local area in need of a tiling makeover. Entrants were asked to submit a short description detailing how they would like the nominated space to be transformed with tiles. Home Hardware shop manager receives Special Recognition Award


Fiona Robson was presented with the accolade at the recent Home Hardware convention in recognition of the help and support she has given to The Islands Home Hardware on the Isles of Scilly. Ms Robson was presented with the award at the convention at The Woolacombe Bay Hotel last month. According to Home Hardware, when she applied for the post of part-time shop assistant at The Islands Home Hardware in April 1997, Ms Robson stated that she wanted ‘a job with no responsibilities’. Now, 20 years later she is the full- time manager and is responsible for a staff of five and a turnover approaching half a million pounds.

Commenting on the win, Ms Haydon said: “As a social enterprise, and not a charity, one of the areas that often gets overlooked for refurbishments is the toilets, due to financial constraints. This fantastic prize will allow us to improve the bathrooms for the children who use this facility, and it will be gratefully received.” Complete Kidz will receive tiles and accompanying tiling materials worth £500 courtesy of Tile Trader to complete the much-needed makeover.


The team was encouraged to give a minimum of £2 each, which raised £350 for Sussex-based children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House. The hospice cares for 300 children and young adults with progressive life-shortening conditions. It currently costs more than £3.5million each year


to provide care services, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes.

Pateman appointed as HTA Chair


The HTA has announced the appointment of Chris Pateman as the chair of the association. In this new role Chris will assist the HTA Board in co-ordinating the activities of the HTA Executive and their teams at Horticulture House, ensuring that the strategic objectives of the association are being achieved. In addition, the chair will represent the HTA at a senior level to Government and other stakeholders. Chris was formerly the CEO of the Federation of Communication Services (FCS), a position he held for the last five years. In this role Mr Pateman had the ultimate responsibility for representing FCS members’ interests to policy- makers and regulators, and for developing the Federation as the authoritative voice on all issues which bear upon business-grade voice and data connectivity. Commenting on the appointment HTA president Adam Taylor said: “We are delighted that Chris will be joining us as chair of the association. With such a wealth of experience of representing member interests’ in his previous roles we very much look forward to his input on behalf of the horticultural industry.”


Entrepreneur and sewing bee judge backs creativity at GCA conference


The entrepreneur made famous for his role as a judge on BBC’s ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’, Patrick Grant, is speaking at the Garden Centre Association’s 2018 conference. As well as appearing on TV, and despite having no fashion experience and being an engineer by trade, Mr. Grant is also the owner and creative director of Savile Row tailors’ Norton & Sons.


Chief executive of the GCA, Iain Wylie enthused: “Patrick will be entertaining us all with the tale of his accidental entrepreneurship and the importance of creativity in business, when he takes the conference podium in the afternoon on Tuesday, January 23. As well as running his own business, he has a


wealth of experience and consults for brands such as Barbour and The Kooples, and is an honourary Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University.”

conference takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Stratford- upon-Avon, Warwickshire from January 21 until 24, 2018.
