“Let’s make 2018 a
fantastic year for us all”
Editor, Fiona Garcia:
fgarcia@datateam.co.uk
Firstly, I’d like to wish you all a happy New Year. Despite some pretty dire stuff in the media this month – from the Carillion collapse, to a seemingly endless and disconcerting series of blunders and global gaffes by US President Donald Trump – I wanted to start our first issue of 2018 on a positive note. With that in mind, we’ve got some great stories from retailers and suppliers alike who are full of optimism and have an exciting year ahead. UK manufacturers Newsome Tools and What More have been investing in the continued growth of their impressive export businesses (with the latter bagging a spot on BBC Breakfast this month), whilst we speak to a team at Walton Flooring Centre that’s bursting with new ideas and enthusiasm to bring its own take on flooring retailing to new locations in the UK. There should be plenty to inspire in this issue if you are in need of succour after a tough year. It’s also encouraging to see yet another set of stellar results from Woodie’s, as demand in the Irish DIY market continues to pick up, and hear news of further growth at independent retailer Covers, as it snaps up another builders merchant business – not to mention the sterling spirit of paint and woodcare specialist Rustins, which was back manufacturing within a week of the devastating fire that ripped through its warehouse. Just one example that our industry is made of sterner stuff. And, if that isn’t enough to give you a lift, Spring Fair promises to have experts on hand to help you maximise you profits and enhance your visual merchandising instore next month.
People often like to bandy around comments like ‘this is going to be your year’ as we delve into a new 12-month period. Well, I hope that is the case for every one of you, and for the industry as a whole. Let’s make 2018 a fantastic year for us all.
