PAINTING & DECORATING THE PRODUCTS PAINTERS NEED

This year, NPD at painting supplies product Purdy has concentrated on its accessories, with a particular focus on increasing productivity on site. BMJ talked to Andy Cummins, senior product manager at Purdy to find out more.

P

urdy’s aim has always been to offer the right tool for the job, developing products that are problem-solvers, which make it quicker and easier to achieve professional results. This includes looking beyond the brushes and rollers themselves, to new lines that aim to make a decorator’s life easier in a multitude of ways. From a merchant’s perspective, brand extensions offer a great opportunity for additional sales, particularly from premium brands such as Purdy, who have a loyal customer base.

Purdy Pail

The first of two new products from Purdy is the Purdy Pail. This one litre capacity paint bucket has been ergonomically designed with multiple grip options - including a coffee-cup style adjustable hand grip for pouring and holding, and a flexible bail handle for general carrying. It can also fit securely onto a ladder hook, making painting at height easier and safer than ever as both hands are kept free. The Pail has been designed with a side mini roller rest that fits up to 4.5” mini roller sleeves and the interior moulding keeps rollers out of the paint, preventing them from becoming saturated. What’s more, when cutting in or doing detailed work, professionals can secure brushes up to a width of 3” using the integrated brush magnet to ensure the brush does not get overloaded with paint. These features make it easier for professionals to keep multiple brushes with them at all times, which improves efficiency when working across large spaces or at height. It also helps to keep the site tidier as brushes do not have to be left lying around.

In addition, the Purdy Pail includes a mini roller grid that is moulded into the pail and can be used to easily remove excess paint and ensure that equal pick-up of product is distributed throughout for a flawless application.

Finally, Purdy has also released liners specifically for the Purdy Pail that allow for quick colour changes and clean up once work is completed. Available in packs of three, the liners feature the same roll-off grid pattern as the Pail to help achieve a quality finish. Speaking about the Purdy Pail, Steve Smith from SRS Décor said: “I really like the Purdy Pail

and can see it being an everyday essential for both emulsion and woodwork. The side grip is comfortable to use over extended periods and I like the brush magnet and roller holder as it makes swapping between tools a breeze. The liners are also a great idea for colour changes when using emulsion, as well as for quick and easy cleanup. I will definitely be using the Purdy Pail and liners on a daily basis.”

Purdy Backpack

With the Purdy Backpack, merchants’ customers can say goodbye to the days of having to make multiple trips to the van. The first painter’s backpack, this product has been designed to store professional painting tools and makes it easy and comfortable to carry them to and from site.

It is manufactured from a durable, weather resistant fabric and features heavy duty grips and rugged zippers, so customers have peace of mind that they are investing in a long-lasting solution. What’s more, the Backpack has been designed so that weight is evenly distributed. This means that, even when it is full, it is easy and comfortable to carry around. It has also been designed with several dedicated pockets for a variety of tools, including a pocket for roller frames and sleeves up to 18”, an external extension pole compartment, as well as slots for prep tools and brushes – so professionals can store a whole host of products and take everything they need with them in one go. There are even external compartments and clips for personal items and an external USB connector to keep devices charged when used with a power bank. Once on site, customers can benefit from the two foldout compartments situated in the front of the Backpack. These lay flat so that professionals can easily access their tools and brushes and quickly switch between tools and tasks without having to dig around in the bag for the right product. The Backpack also has rubber feet, so it can stand up without tipping. At the end of the day, customers can easily transport wet brushes and rollers thanks to the detachable pouch. This means that paint is contained within the compartment, speeding up the clean-up time on site and reducing the risk of wet products leaking on to other tools. Customers have been really positive about the new products too. Steven Waterhouse,

owner of The House Painting Company said: “I have been a decorator for over 30 years and the Purdy Backpack is a game changer. I have spent countless hours searching my van for my favourite brush, roller, filling knife and roller pole but not anymore – everything is in one place.

“You can fit everything you need into the Backpack and the way it opens means that you can select the right tool easily. I spend lots on tools and they’re all safely in one place. The brushes are kept straight too, so the bristles don’t get damaged.

“It saves room in my van over conventional toolboxes and is easier to carry to site. With the tools on your back, your hands are free to carry paint and wallpaper. When working in a city where remote parking is an issue you can use public transport with ease.” With the Purdy Backpack and Pail, merchants can offer professionals painters and decorators the solutions they need to make work easier, more efficient and safer.
