HEATING, PLUMBING & DRAINAGE
HOPE FOR HYDROGEN FROM GOVERNMENT STRATEGY
The Government has published its Hydrogen Strategy, looking at its plans for rolling out the fuel at a useful scale for the UK heating industry.
T
he role and vision for the development of hydrogen as a fuel for heating homes and businesses has been published by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. The publication, which builds upon the ambitions in last year’s 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, has been welcomed by many in the heating industry.
Jeff House, Head of External Affairs at Baxi Heating says: “The energy transition is upon us and we are shifting today’s energy use to low and zero carbon sources. The way in which we heat and provide hot water to our homes and businesses will change, and we are developing technologies that will support this transition. A bold and pragmatic policy framework will encourage investment and drive change.
“As an energy carrier, hydrogen has many uses that will help to decarbonise heating, transport and industry. We therefore welcome the government’s assurance to the the public

today that hydrogen can be made as safe as natural gas.
“Alongside the Strategy, the Government is publishing its proposed business model for supporting hydrogen production in the form of a Contract for Difference. This approach has been utilised successfully for offshore wind and will enable the sector to invest in early-stage projects and reduce the cost of hydrogen. The availability of low-cost hydrogen at scale is a key enabler of the deployment of hydrogen for heat.
Marley Alutec keeps up apearances Marley Alutec has contributed to the delivery of a stunning new build property in Stapeley, Cheshire. Broadoaks is a newly built, two-storey contemporary building, which required a sustainable guttering system to complement the design of the build. Marley Alutec’s Evoke fascia type A was used on the sloping eaves and type B on the bargeboards. Bespoke box end corners were designed to ensure the transition from eaves
to bargeboard was unobtrusive yet easy to install. Evolve Ogee rainwater goods and Flushfit pipes were chosen to compliment the contemporary nature of the build, all in RAL7016 anthracite grey.
When aluminium eaves systems can be installed easily and cost effectively, they become a more viable option for developers and their architects who are looking for durability and a design edge that distinguished them from the competition.

“We believe there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, and a whole range of heating technologies will need to be deployed for a range of properties. Baxi Heating, as part of BDR Thermea Group, is at the forefront of developing clean heating solutions, including our ground-breaking development of hydrogen boilers.
“Our work with the Hy4Heat project and associated demonstration sites in the UK show technical feasibility of this solution. We believe the Government should act upon advice from the Climate Change Committee and other sources advocating a mandate that all boiler sales from 2025 should be hydrogen-ready in order to help pre-populate a swathe of the housing stock ready for a future conversion. “Technology, energy efficiency and business models are all bit parts in the wider picture. Skilled installers and contractors will be utterly essential to success, so we are glad to see the announcement of a hydrogen sector development action plan in early 2022 setting out how the government will support companies to secure supply chain opportunities, skills and jobs in hydrogen.
“Following the Hydrogen Strategy, we look forward to several important publications in the lead up to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), including consultations on the role for hydrogen-ready appliances, off gas grid heating measures and the UK Heat and Buildings Strategy.” BMJ
Brett Martin cascades design to Victorian Gothic The period cast iron detailing and styling of Brett Martin’s Cascade rainwater system has beem chosen for the redevelopment of a stunning listed Victorian building in West London, keeping in with the distinctive Gothic-style design. In the Bradmore Conservation Area of Hammersmith, the former Mission Hall dates from 1883-4. While originally built as a church hall, it was also used as a working men’s club, a kitchen for the poor and since the 1960s was the workspace of a scenic artist specialising in backcloths for stage and film. For the west façade on Iffley Road, the architect specified an authentic Porcelain White Cast Iron Style Hopper in the Gothic design to bring period authenticity to the distinctive façade . A 105mm Round Downpipe in Porcelain White was also installed to match the white painted cement render. The decorative hopper was also used to replicate the five arched windows on the front of the façade.”
Cascade is available in a choice of eight heritage colours including Porcelain White, Classic Black, Anthracite Grey, Oxford Blue, Chartwell Green, Olive Green, Graphite Grey, and Sandstone. Cascade is also UV stabilised for a maintenance-free system that will stay looking great and working well for years and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Hopper styles include Bath and Ogee along with a number of optional decorative motifs including Fleur de Lys, Lion, Tudor Rose, Leaf, Gargoyle and Four Leaf Square.
