To meet the varied demands of its customer base, Harris & Bailey operates a carefully crafted fleet, configured for each aspect of the business. For plumbing and sanitary operations, six standard 3.5-tonne vans handle everyday deliveries, while heavier loads are managed by two 7.5-tonne lorries equipped with tail lifts. On the construction side, the fleet is built for strength and scale; including one 18-tonne HGV, equipped with a ‘Palfinger’ loader crane, and three 26-tonne vehicles, each fitted with cranes and specifically designed to transport bulkier materials.


Safety is paramount


Harris & Bailey’s fleet meets the highest standard of safety and compliance, holding FORS Gold, the highest accreditation in the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme for commercial vehicle safety and environmental performance; vital for navigating the complex logistics of Central London. Each HGV vehicle is equipped with advanced safety features, including tail lift protectors, audible and visual alerts and comprehensive 360-degree camera systems. Mark Privett, transport manager at Harris & Bailey, explains: ‘It gives our drivers the confidence and tools they need to operate safely and efficiently, even in the most challenging urban environments. “We prioritise protecting our team, other road users, and the environment while maintaining the reliability our clients expect. The safety features we use on vehicles are essential for navigating busy streets; it helps our drivers to maintain full situational awareness and reduces the risk to vulnerable road users.”


Precise planning


Operational logistics also present a unique set of challenges. Currently, the company relies on a paper-based system for route planning across London and surrounding areas. Each job requires meticulous planning; combining vehicle capacity, customer requirements, and the potential constraints poised by traffic and infrastructure. Privett notes; “Our drivers’ intimate knowledge of local routes is invaluable. Their expertise ensures deliveries are executed safely and efficiently.”

will streamline our route management, improve delivery accuracy, and significantly reduce administrative overheads, it represents a major step forward in modernising our logistical operations.”


Environmental responsibility is a core pillar of Harris & Bailey’s fleet strategy. All vehicles meet Euro 6 emission standards, and drivers receive dedicated environmental awareness training to promote fuel-efficient and responsible driving practices. Alongside this, Harris & Bailey ensures its fleet is consistently maintained and fully compliant with industry standards. Heavy-duty vehicles undergo inspections every eight weeks, alongside scheduled maintenance and tail lift testing and vans follow standard MOT and tax schedules, ensuring all vehicles meet legal and operational requirements before leaving the yard. The transport team, operate a colour- coded system for tracking maintenance tasks, ensuring that no vehicle is deployed unless fully compliant. This proactive approach reduces disruptions and mitigates the risk of regulatory penalties, while safeguarding drivers and the public.
