ADVERTORIAL KNAUF AQUAPANEL® CEMENT BOARD INDOOR: THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR SHOWERS AND BATHROOMS
S
howers and bathrooms by their very nature are exposed to moisture, chemicals and mould. Contrary to popular belief, bathroom tiles and grouting do not protect the substrate from all water ingress, so the substrate can fail if a water-resistant tilebacker is not used, potentially leading to falling tiles, damp related illness and damage to structures or furniture elsewhere in the room. For home improvement projects, these consequences impose a risk to health and safety and can be highly disruptive and costly to remedy. Installers risk reputational damage too. In 2024, the National House Building Council (NHBC) published the fourth issue of the Technical Guidance 9.2/06, detailing what constitutes appropriate tiling substrates in bath and shower enclosures, wet rooms and bathroom pods. The guidance requires a tanking system to be installed anywhere a power shower is in operation and in all wet rooms, due to the increased exposure to water ingress. Tanking systems are a waterproof barrier underneath the tile which protects the substrate below.
Plasterboards cannot be used where a power shower is installed, while even areas around traditional showers must be protected by a moisture- resistant plasterboard. Products manufactured to BS: EN 12467 are appropriate for use in all scenarios in wet indoor areas outlined by the NHBC, including power showers, wet rooms and bath/showers.
KNAUF AQUAPANEL® CEMENT BOARD
INDOOR: AN IDEAL SOLUTION Knauf AQUAPANEL® Cement Board Indoor is manufactured to BS: EN 12467 standards, ensuring it meets NHBC Guidance in all scenarios including tanking. This makes it ideal for home improvement and bathroom refurbishment projects. The specialist board is made from aggregated Portland cement with coated glass fibre mesh embedded in the back and front surfaces, meaning it is unaffected when immersed in water, is resistant to chemicals and mould growth.
STRONG TILE SUPPORT
AQUAPANEL® boards are also extremely strong and will not warp, degrade, twist or expand when in contact with moisture. This ensures the substrate remains durable and helps protect against the risks
of falling tiles and mould-related illnesses. The board’s impressive strength is such that it can hold up to 50kg/m2
method, and able to support up to 120kg/m2 enhanced buildup.

Furthermore, boards are 12.5mm thick to align to UK plasterboards, MgO free for compliance with building insurance requirements and non- combustible (A1 Fire rated) for the best in fire resistance performance. Despite its strength, the board has a bending radius of up to 1 metre and any fine cracks on the surface will not negatively impact performance, ensuring design flexibility for creative architectures in modern wet rooms.
FAST AND EASY INSTALLATION Knauf AQUAPANEL® Cement Board Indoor is easy to cut and install, despite the perception that cement boards can be more difficult to install than standard plasterboard. The board weighs just 11kg/m2

it easy to move around site, while it is simple to cut using the score and snap method, with only a sharp knife and a straight edge required and no pre-drilling. As well as high performance, AQUAPANEL® Cement Board Indoor saves installers’ time on site, facilitating better and more efficient results, which can be invaluable to smaller contractors.
A HOLISTIC SYSTEM
The AQUAPANEL® Indoor partition system comprises of Knauf AQUAPANEL® Cement Board Indoor, as well as Knauf AQUAPANEL® screws, primer, tape and jointing. Knauf AQUAPANEL® Maxi Screws have been specifically developed for fixing the board to timber and metal framework of differing thicknesses. The screws have a special corrosion-proof coating which provides a guaranteed 720 hours’ corrosion resistance in a salt spray test. Normal drywall screws should not be used in this environment as they do not offer sufficient corrosion resistance.
The system can also be finished using either Knauf October 2025
