The changing landscape of, and the difficulties faced by, the UK builders merchant market is more evident than ever in these pages. Few merchants increased turnover on the previous year; those that managed it did so largely on the back of expansion and acquisition.
The usual caveat applies with these figures. BMJ uses only the information which is in the public domain. The pace at which the companies report their financial results differs, and they don’t all have the same financial year ends. This means, for example, that EH Smith’s 12 months to June 30 2025 and Beggs & Partners’ to September 30 2025 are up against the Haldane Group’s 12 months to December 31 2024, and Robert Price’s to September 30 2024.
It’s also worth noting that missing from this year’s League Tables are the following companies: Crossling, Paintwell and National Timber Group. Crossling sold to UK Plumbing Supplies in January 2024, and its figures are now combined into the wider UK Plumbing Supplies group entry. acquired 38 branches and the Promain distributor, keeping the Paintwell brand trading. National Timber Group, also private-equity funded, entered administration in November 2024. Some of its branches have been acquired by Beatsons and Jewson, other elements by Premier Forest Products. Many locations have been closed.
