VIEWPOINT LOFT INSULATION: EASY

ADDED VALUE OPTION Matt Neary, national sales manager, Knauf Insulation

LOFT ROLL IS the perfect example of an evergreen product. It’s relatively simple to install correctly, efficient and widely available, making it the default choice for loft insulation. But merchants armed with additional expertise on how best practices are changing can leverage this commercial opportunity further. Housebuilders have recognised the advantages of going beyond energy regulations when installing loft insulation and retrofitting loft spaces remains one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to improve a home’s thermal performance.

Going beyond regulations

Approved Document L sets out a maximum U-value of 0.16 W/m2K for all roofs in new residential buildings. This can typically be achieved with 270mm of loft insulation, but many housebuilders are going much further, targeting depths of 400mm or even 500mm. Installing Loft Roll to these higher thicknesses has a couple of advantages. Cross-laying additional insulation allows housebuilders to mitigate the effects of thermal bridging through the joists. and the eaves. If maintaining the gap is proving tricky, eaves vents should be installed to maintain the flow of air in and out of the cold roof.

Merchants can help their customers to identify potential problems with their current insulation and offer guidance on remediation, whether that means topping up existing insulation, troubleshooting installation or entirely replacing it with new material.

A one-stop shop for loft insulation

it’s possible to achieve a U-value as low as 0.08 W/m2K. Loft insulation has a favourable cost- performance ratio, making it a valuable approach for new builds and giving housebuilders flexibility in the thermal performance of other building elements.

Loft performance There’s a strong case for retrofitting additional layers of loft insulation in older buildings, but insufficient depth isn’t the only common issue in UK homes. Uneven layers, compression and other poor installation practices are rife. Everyone uses their

loft for storage and it’s all too easy to leave boxes on top of the insulation, compressing it and hobbling its thermal performance. Loft boards are often installed too low, meaning they also compress the insulation and have a similar effect on its functionality.

Although Loft Roll is easier to install than many comparable insulation products, it still requires attention to detail. For example, loft insulation must be pushed into the eaves to join the top of the wall insulation. And there needs to be a 50mm gap between the top of the insulation

To fully serve customers taking on loft insulation projects, merchants should offer more than just the insulation rolls. A complete solution includes: • Loft boards (and raising kits) to allow for storage without compressing insulation • PPE and tools, such as safety glasses, masks, and crawl boards • Draught excluders for loft hatches • Eave ventilation trays to prevent condensation • Sealants for ensuring airtightness

By positioning themselves as a one-stop-shop for loft insulation, merchants can strengthen customer loyalty, increase sales, and support customers in delivering high-performing lofts.

An evergreen proposition

Merchants should offer more than just the insulation rolls

Loft Roll might be evergreen, but that doesn’t mean it’s standing still. With new regulations, rising customer expectations and a clear push towards achieving ‘as- built’ performance, it remains an opportunity for merchants to add value, build loyalty, and boost sales. Merchants who proactively train their staff to become loft insulation experts will be best positioned to leverage this.. BMJ
