STEAL A MARCH ON SECURITY SOLUTIONS

It may be Summer now, but security product stockists need to be looking ahead to the sales opportunties afforded by the darker evenings, when burglary numbers rise.

W

ith the summer months in full swing, homeowners are undoubtedly enjoying spending their time outdoors.

But, as we approach autumn, many will likely turn their attention from the outside, in, making necessary home improvements to prepare their property for the colder months ahead. And this is certainly a smart move, says Gavin Kirk, head of trade at Yale. “As the clocks go back, statistically one’s home is more likely to be a target of domestic burglary, as opportunists make the most of the darker nights. In fact, during the autumn and winter months, recent statistics have revealed that burglaries can spike by as much as 25%1.” Kirk says that, along with statistics from the ONS highlighting that 64% of burglaries in England and Wales occur when residents are at home2, as the autumn approaches and people spend more time indoors, we’ll expect to see homeowners begin to prioritise their home security once again.

Double up on security solutions “As the colder months approach, the media is quick to highlight the risks properties are under as the clocks go back. The statistics often perpetuate the fact that homeowners should prioritise their home security at this time, opening up opportunities for installers and merchants alike,” he says. “A key focus for these homeowners should be upgrading their door security, a particular category that merchants should also be pushing in-branch.” The front door is the most preferred point of entry for opportunist burglars, with figures revealing that 76% of household burglaries in England and Wales occurred when the culprit accessed the home through a door3. Kirks adds that merchants looking to make the most of this profitable period should consider stocking up on TS007-certified cylinder products, ensuring installers are offering the highest level of protection to homeowners.

Combined with a 3-star cylinder, the PAS3621 accreditated Doormaster can improve the level of door security, reaching the recommended PAS24 approved standard and providing the maximum level of security. Kirk also says that the market has also seen a recent shift towards smart gadgets, particularly in the security sector.

“Consumers continue to be drawn to the idea of smart technology, more widely in the use of smart door locks, offering convenience and control via a smartphone.

“With 2.22 million smart homes in the UK as of 20214, this is a rapidly growing market, offering up opportunities for merchants who can capitalise on this initial shift towards smart lock technology,” he says.

The TS007 standard is currently the highest level of certification available for a cylinder lock, being approved by independent industry body, the British Standards Institution. The standard is also backed by the hardware industry, highlighting a product’s ability to withstand a range of known cylinder attack methods. “At Yale, our Platinum 3 Star Cylinder has been developed in response to these ever- changing attack methods. Offering superior strength, the Platinum 3 Star model is Yale’s most secure cylinder yet, providing defence against numerous attack methods including Anti-Snap, Anti-Pick and Anti-Bump. “When paired with the Platinum 3 Star Cylinder, Yale’s replacement lock offering can also provide essential upgrades to homeowners during this vulnerable time,” he explains. Suitable for doors with a multipoint lock and top and bottom hooks or bolts, Yale’s Doormaster range has been designed with professional installers in mind, offering Crop and Mate technology to maximise the scope of installation.

With options available for both PVCu and timber doors with multipoint locks, the Doormaster range offers a high level of security.

With this in mind, Kirk says the Yale Conexis L1 Smart Door Lock offers a convenient, hassle- free solution to homeowners looking to invest in smart technology. “Its simplistic design ensures that consumers can have control over their door security from anywhere at any time, gaining access via a key card, key tag, phone tag or via the handy smartphone app. “Being the world’s first BSI-approved smart lock, the Conexis L1 can also compete with the traditional ‘lock and key’ for security. Using bank-level encrypted Bluetooth technology, a built-in tamper alarm and incorrect pin code functionality, this solution offers a new range of security features not seen before with a ‘traditional’ lock.”

With a range of lock options available to stock up on ahead of the autumn season, placing these products at key selling points across the store will put door security at front of mind for customers.

Kirk bellieves that, for merchants, being clued up on the lock standards is essential. “If they can recommend relevant door security products to inform installers on the benefits of purchasing these maximum-security products, they can maximise on sales during this profitable period,” he says. BMJ
