woodware Why Work with Wood?

T&G Woodware discuss the environmental and hygiene benefits that wooden kitchen boards and utensils can offer.

E

stablished in 1975, 2020 marks a milestone for us in many ways, especially as it is our 45th birthday year and what a journey it has been. Starting out as a woodware company, we

have transformed into a lifestyle brand with quality and beautiful design at the heart of everything we do. Environmental concerns are central to T&G as

our product range is still predominantly wood. Our policy is to try to ensure that all T&G natural wood products are manufactured from timbers sourced from well-managed and sustainable forests and plantations. Timber is a precious resource in terms of both its own life and the diverse flora and fauna it supports. T&G pay particular attention to the products we design and manufacture, their sustainability and suitability for our increasingly environmentally concerned customers. T&G has held FSC® certification for over 20

years, and the FSC® logo on our natural beech boards, salt and pepper mills and utensils gives the customer and independent guarantee that the forest is managed according to agreed social, environmental and economic standards. (featured image) Our natural wood chopping, serving and

presentation boards are made from a variety of woods and we have several collections to suit all tastes and budgets. They are designed to suit a variety of purposes from breadboards and chopping boards to serving platters and cheese boards. The new ‘Deco’ range introduced this year is a 1920’s inspired range of sophisticated serving, sharing and dining pieces with sharply defined lines and geometric art deco style in natural wood, perfect for adding a little natural glamour to the kitchen. The beauty of hevea wood such as our ‘colonial Home’ range gives a natural light

colouring, showing off the natural grain of the wood and creates lovely kitchen pieces and a different look to the dark woods on offer. The dark rich acacia woods, rustic acacia woods, natural oak woods give our collections a wide choice for customers in terms of style and design. For example, T&G’s Tuscany range has many different styles and shapes of wood boards and table mats that add a warm, rich feel to the kitchen. The new ‘Cottage Garden’ range launched for 2020 has been inspired by traditional British blooms and our respect and need to save native flowers and insects and includes a selection of natural wood serving and presentation boards, utensils with intricate laser detail, made from FSC® certified beech wood, supporting the natural world. Wooden boards and utensils are hygienic, making it the perfect material for kitchen items. Findings have shown that wooden surfaces can decontaminate themselves, without the aid of bleach or harsh cleaning solutions. It is not entirely clear how the natural woods defence mechanism works, but seemingly the bacteria are sucked into the porous surface and ‘strangled’ by the anti-microbial chemicals that live naturally within trees to protect themselves. The tests proved that bacteria died very quickly on wood, but thrived on boards made from all types of polymer and rubber and natural wood boards were simply the best hygienic choice ( a full report is available from T&G’s marketing department). It makes sense, natural wood has been used for centuries in the use of food preparation and presentation and in terms of serving and eating. An additional benefit to using a natural wood

board is the kindness of the wood to knife blades. The wood does not dull them quickly as it absorbs the shock better than plastic or glass. These benefits are just another reason

in addition to the fact that wood is a natural renewable source to use in the kitchen. Styling the kitchen and home with natural and sustainable wood products are the ideal way to contribute to sustainable living. Caring and looking after these beautiful natural wood items allows the lifetime and beauty of the wood to be maintained, resulting in a more cost-effective purchase and the chance to give back to the environment. Having natural wood boards, salt and pepper mills and utensils in the kitchen is another way of working with and bringing the natural world into our homes in a caring and sustainable way.
