PEOPLE A Briefer Encounter
Jason Maughan, Head of Sales at Denby, tells Will McGill about his Housewares journey.
What is your current role and how long have you been doing it? I’ve been with Denby for seven years, for the last four as Denby’s Head of Sales and previously as the National Sales Manager.
What does your role entail? The main role, of course, is the commercial management of the sales team and all trade accounts in the UK through third party sales. It’s also great to be part of the main business as the role entails working with many departments such as ensure that we have one shared brand vision enabling us collectively to move the brand forward. I love going into the design department to see the designers working on new designs and walking through the pottery to see the skilled craftsmen and women creating beautiful ceramics from raw clay – it never loses its appeal.

How did you get started in the industry?
was in Fenwicks of Newcastle where I could see salespeople coming in and that’s where I thought that this was something I’d sales role was for Tefal and I came to Denby for a year early in my working life to gain some experience where my father also worked in sales. I’ve worked in the housewares sector for quite a few years including roles at Royal Doulton, Enesco, Bodum and industry as Global Head of Sales & Marketing at Abbeycrest PLC.
What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? All my previous roles were in sales and proved a worthwhile experience and I was constantly learning by taking extra training when available. It’s such a lively industry. I remember my father, of course, coming home and talking about working for Denby and explaining about the industry which helped me understand all the different aspects of the role and appreciate the commitment and extra hours that were needed to put into
What would you like to achieve in this role? To continue to grow Denby’s product portfolio in the UK and Ireland as we continue to take an omni-channel approach engaging with more
w
digital businesses and grow the business in the hospitality sector for which Denby products are inherently suited.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Achieving the global role for Abbeycrest was both a highlight and challenge looking after overseas markets such as South Africa, Australia, Asia and Italy and many more which included managing their trade shows and sales teams. However, it has been great returning to Denby which is respected around the world and, my father is delighted of course.
What do you see as the main issues for retailers and the industry at the moment?
buying in the volumes retailers need them to in order to sustain their making consumers too nervous to part with their hard earned income.
What one piece of advice would you give yourself at the start of your career? Stay committed and focused and be prepared to go the extra mile.
What keeps you busy at the weekends? Family and the house – in that order – I gave up all personal hobbies once children arrived – in the hope that one day I’ll get them back…
If you’re at the bar, what are you drinking? A pint of larger it is for me!
As a youngster it was the Star Wars Trilogy which I would watch time and time again and fortunately for me my daughter and son grew up currently I’m listening to more podcasts than reading books.
If you could have dinner who would it be and why? Whilst there really are too many to name, I think if pushed I would have to nominate to understand what that man was thinking, he was awesome.
