news Stylish home enhancement innovator brands join BHETA
A new company, N&P Housewares set up by Nick Gabb to distribute products from French kitchenware innovator, Mastrad, Italian housewares, garden and pet products designer, Stefanplast and German laundry and household products company Casa Si, has joined the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA). All three brands are known for innovation and style. Known for its invention of
everlasting steel soap, Mastrad started in 1994 and specialises in the design of culinary
accessories, combining utility, ergonomics and colour. The multi-award-winning company has expanded its range considerably in recent years and now covers cooking, baking and food preparation, as well as kitchen organisation and storage, and children and baby ranges. It is best known in the UK for its signature product, the patented Orka silicone oven mitt, which achieved ‘Excellence’ at the Housewares Awards and ‘Innovation of the year’ from the Good Housekeeping Institute. Mastrad expanded
into smart kitchenware with its app-controlled food storage system..
Stefanplast was formed in Italy in 1964 as a manufacturer of plastic products for household use. Today it is a leader in recyclability and the use of recycled plastics, making products for the housewares, garden and pet categories. Casa Si was founded in 1998 in Austria and is one of the most comprehensive ranges of ironing boards, cloth dryers, rotary airers, shopping trolleys and step stools available.
BHETA sponsored walk team to double distance as target reached early
The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) team undertaking a collective sponsored walk (or run) in aid of The Rainy Day Trust is doubling its target to over 1000 miles by Christmas, having already achieved the original goal of 509 miles. Membership services manager, Nicola Adams who is organising the trek explained, “The original idea was to cover 509 miles, that being the distance between BHETA’s most northerly member, housewares
manufacturer, Aydya based in Dundee and the most southerly, heating and plumbing supplier, Select Products based in Torbay. But as we have already completed the ‘trip’ between Aydya and Select with three weeks to go until the deadline, we thought we should turn around and complete a return journey!”
With 500 or so miles added on, each member of the BHETA team will individually complete as many miles as they can ahead of Christmas, recording the distances
achieved until the round-trip total is achieved.
Nicola continued, “The Rainy Day Trust is the only charity which exists solely to help people who work or have worked in the UK’s home improvement and enhancement industry, so it’s a great cause for BHETA to support. We are all hoping that the BHETA membership will sponsor us either as individuals or as a team, so we can raise funds which are much needed in these difficult times.
BHETA objects to government’s late-stage changes to plastic packaging tax proposal
The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) has written to Government outlining its strong objections to last minute additions to the draft Plastic Packaging tax legislation. Specifically, the sudden late-stage extension of the scope of the legislation to include consumer goods as well as packaging. The draft legislation on plastic packaging - which says that all packaging which is not at least 30% made from recycled plastic is subject to tax levies - has been in consultation for some time, but in a conference call on 11th December, HMRC

informed the Joint Trading Associations, including BHETA, that it will be including plastic consumer goods in the scope of the new law. Both plastic buckets and plastic storage boxes were explicitly stated as being included in the tax, but a full list was not provided, meaning items such as wheelbarrows, plant pots, lunchboxes, water bottles and many other similar items may also be included.
Under the new legislation,
from April 2022 all plastic items used in the packaging of products must include a minimum of 30% recycled content, or face taxes of £200 per metric tonne of chargeable
plastic packaging components. BHETA’s Chief Operating
Officer, Will Jones said, “The overall trajectory towards a more sustainable world is not disputed but if it is to progress, it must be via a responsibly managed process. Suddenly adding new criteria to proposed legislation in which we have all been consulting at this late stage is just not
acceptable.Suddenly adding consumer products into the scope of the proposed laws in December and asking for final feedback by 7th January is unreasonable and irresponsible, both in terms of the timeframe and the significant impact.”

BHETA Expands Housewares Committee
The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) has expanded its housewares committee with the addition of two new members Claire Whalley-Livesey has been with
Meyer Group since September 2019 and is Group Sales Director covering Meyer UK, Meyer EMEA and JWP. Prior to joining Meyer, Claire worked in both sales and category roles in the UK and Europe within brand and own brand in the household and health and beauty sectors. Jane Mason joined DKB as Sales
Director in June 2020, and this will be her second stint on the BHETA housewares committee. She previously spent over 14 years at Le Creuset and prior to that had roles with Unilever, Rank Hovis McDougal and Dyson. Seema Grantham, BHETA’s sector manager for housewares commented, “It is brilliant to see such experienced people joining the team. I know both Jane and Claire are immensely committed to the housewares sector and home enhancement overall. I am sure they will both contribute immensely and help to drive the industry forward.”
BHETA service provider updates members on customs implications
In a British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) webinar with business service provider, Strong & Herd LLP members were guided through the detailed implications of BREXIT – deal or no deal – for exports and imports. Strong & Herd LLP is a leading expert in all aspects of international trade. This was a granular guide to all the implications for all possible outcomes and the need for customs declarations at all points following the possible end to ‘free’ circulation. Bluntly, this could change the definition of export – and conversely import - from anything leaving / entering the European Union to anything leaving / entering UK shores including Northern Ireland.
As the UK awaits the outcome of trade talks, Strong & Herd supplied an illuminating summary of the practical, legislative and taxation implications of possible scenarios and the need to be prepared. This included in depth guidance on Incoterms plus the cost implications for the relevant parties. BHETA’s marketing manager, Steve
Richardson commented, “This was an informative session, which will have been of immense help to BHETA members dealing with import or export. The fact is we will not know actual implications until the last possible moment, so awareness and preparation is all.”
