lastest NAADUK guidance document NAAD-22: fi re dampers
The National Association of Air Duct Specialists UK (NAADUK) has just launched its new guidance document NAAD-22: Fire Dampers. The purpose of the document is to inform, educate and improve standards for fi re dampers across the installation, maintenance and testing spheres
B
y following the steps laid out in the document it will give technicians, designers and testers confi dence in the correct handling
of fire dampers across all sites in the built environment. The document has been written with the background knowledge of all users in mind, from those who are just beginning their journey to those with decades of experience in fire safety. The whole document lays out correct procedures and processes with detailed graphics, flowcharts and pictures to assist in comprehension of the complexities of the required standards including, but not limited to, BS:9999, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 & Approved Document B. NAAD22 has been split into three sections,
encompassing Routine Maintenance, Testing & Inspection, Installation Testing & Commissioning and Design for and Selection of Fire Dampers. NAADUK believe this document will contribute to a safer and healthier environment for all. Many of the guidelines, standards and regulations developed by the various associations concerned have contributed greatly to increased safety and wellbeing. NAADUK are building on those pieces to bring everything together in one comprehensive document. The competence and knowledge reflected
across the association has been celebrated by Andrew Stanford, Chairman of NAADUK, who stressed that ‘in addition to the vast pool of technical talent available to the association, the sheer desire to collaborate and create meaningful, inciteful guidance and support has been simply staggering. We will continue to provide engineers, technicians, consultants and

The key take homes here are design for install on new projects and, if inspecting, do not put your clients, yourself, or your company at risk by ignoring incorrect installations; tell someone. I am pleased to have been involved in the development of NAAD-22. We must all keep learning and striving to be the best we can be”.

Competent & compliant – are you sure?
NAAD-22 is to inform responsible persons, duty holders, maintenance engineers, installers and designers around the practice of fi re damper installation, testing, design and maintenance. Fire dampers are an integral part of containing the spread of fi re within buildings and are an integral life safety system that is often neglected when considering the safety of a building and its occupants. Paul White, a major contributor to the expertise of the document and author of several papers on the subject is keen to stress that “the main issue at present is the existing fi re damper stock. Many dampers have been installed incorrectly ignoring the damper manufacturer’s instructions,
Nygel Humphries, head of the NAAD-22 working group, who produced the document said: ‘’The opportunity arose within NAADUK, whose members regularly come across post install issues when carrying out annual maintenance, to create a working group to identify the common issues and address these through publication, with the sole objective of creating a clear guide to inform and create a solid platform to raise competency and understanding within the industry’. Ensuring competence and compliance when assessing fi re dampers is a key area that NAAD22 wants to raise. Education from manufacturers installation methods to testing and design parameters of fi re dampers is key in ensuring that fi re safety is adhered to across the board. NAADUK will be distributing the document
free of charge both in print and online, to any organisations who are involved in fi re safety measures across the UK and worldwide. To get a copy of NAAD22, contact the association directly via email
