generation were increasingly engaging with the climate change agenda. The group discussed the implications of the speed of change in the
marketplace with 40% of current core skills expected to be obsolete in under a decade as digitisation and modern methods of construction take a fi rmer grip. The conference also featured the launch of a new industry guide to mould and
condensation in buildings – a collaboration between BESA’s Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Group and Mitsubishi Electric.
Clean air
Leading air quality campaigner Rosamund Adoo Kissi-Debrah told the launch session that a proposed new Clean Air Act – dubbed ‘Ella’s Law’ in memory of her daughter who was the fi rst person in the world to have air pollution stated as her cause of death – would give the UK “the best clean air laws in the world and improve the health of the nation”. A petition in support of the law has already attracted 10,000 signatures and the aim is to raise that to 100,000 to force a debate in Parliament. Despite the government’s recent decision to water down some of its policies,
Net Zero will also continue to be a preoccupation for clients, according to Martin Fahey, head of sustainability at Mitsubishi Electric. He said building services contractors would increasingly fi nd themselves in demand. “We want motivated clients investing in more sustainable buildings and local authorities setting the targets, but ultimately it’s the contractor who will do the delivery,” he said. “Contractors will be asked for the answers because they will be seen to have the knowledge and the solutions.” He advised the sector to “measure everything you possibly can” using digital tools because currently “Net Zero is a destination without a map” and the industry needs to build up greater understanding of where the emissions are coming from to make the most eff ective changes. The conference concluded with a keynote presentation from Lord Markham, the Minister in charge of delivering the government’s programme to rebuild the NHS estate by 2030.
He said the 2030 deadline was a “drop dead date” because several hospitals would have to close as they were no longer fi t for purpose. The improved facilities could cut their operating costs by up to 10% and patient recovery times would be speeded up by 20%, he added. “You should never let a good crisis go to waste,” said Lord Markham. “We have
no choice. These hospitals must be built, and they will be, even if the government changes.

Navigate the heat pump training maze By Graham Bayne, head of installer development, NIBE Energy Systems
o provide the required installer base to help support the increasing heat pump demand, prospective heat pump installers must be empowered through comprehensive support.
This year’s InstallerSHOW provided brilliant opportunities to speak to future
generations of heat pump engineers, discussing the barriers they personally face getting into the industry.
Gaining better insight into the questions many are faced with when attempting
to access the world of heat pumps has really helped us to understand what needs to improve to aid the transition to low carbon domestic heating. Heat pumps are a major part of the UK’s Net Zero strategy and will play a vital
role in decarbonising home heating. The Government wants to install 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028, and we are currently only at a tenth of this fi gure. However, to expand installation fi gures, the available installer base must also increase to meet demand. We work closely with the Heat Pump Association which has estimated that over 50,000 installers will be needed by 2030 to meet increasing demand. With just over 1,500 MCS Certifi ed contractors currently, there is still a long way to go. The available installer base will also need to possess the holistic skills needed to build a sustainable, reputable heat pump market that will contribute to our decarbonisation targets, saving consumers energy and thus money on their energy bills. With the UK’s diverse building stock meaning that installers will need to tailor installations to each property type, ensuring that people can get access to the training that they need will be the fi rst pillar to expanding the heat pump industry. There has been an evident shift in conversations with installers across the
past year. Many are now recognising the vital role heat pumps will play on the route to Net Zero and understand that installers must re-train to help harness the increasing demand for the low carbon technology. However concern has emerged that installers are fi nding it diffi cult to re-train. In addition, whilst MCS, the industry-led quality assurance scheme, can provide customers with confi dence in the quality and reliability of their products and installers whilst allowing them to access government grants, installers must be able to navigate the process easily. Confusing and time-consuming processes can put installers off re-training altogether, and so we are committed to making the training process seamless and accessible to all. A great way to start your MCS journey is through the NIBE Pro Installer
Partnership Scheme. NIBE Pro is a streamlined and professional route to becoming an MCS Certifi ed heat pump installer, steering you through training and certifi cation from start to fi nish. We provide best-in-class digital tools, technical support and business support to help you demonstrate compliance with MCS standards including the quality management system (QMS). As part of the NIBE Pro Training Partnership Scheme, we also off er dedicated support to help installers through the MCS auditing process, NAPIT auditing and inspections, so that installers benefi t from a seamless transition to become a fully qualifi ed heat pump installer. Did you know that NIBE Pro training costs are fully redeemable through the
NIBE Pro voucher scheme? You can recover the costs of this industry-recognised qualifi cation by purchasing NIBE products once you’ve completed the training. Installers who sign up to NIBE Pro may also be entitled to an additional £500
Lord Markham CBE
towards the cost of NIBE Pro thanks to NIBE’s training centres being approved providers of the Government’s Heat Training Grant. The remaining cost will also still be fully redeemable through the NIBE Pro voucher scheme.
