Smart control upgrades can have a mighty impact

As we head into the heating season, it can present a great opportunity for installers to demonstrate added value to customers by helping them cut energy costs through smart heating control upgrades. Here, Martin Wilson, sales director at Resideo, looks at how cutting down on energy costs can be achieved though upgrading to smart thermostats

T

he cost-of-living challenges continues to place real pressure on household budgets – and this includes energy costs. According to

Uswitch, the average electricity bill in the UK stands at £738.45, whilst the price of gas is even higher with average annual bills costing £792.35. As a result, many households will be looking to heating professionals to help guide them with informed advice about how and where they can address their heating consumption and resulting energy bills. One key area where simple adjustments and

relatively small investments can make a big diff erence is an upgrade to heating controls. Unfortunately, many properties across the UK may still have ineffi cient controls for their heating system, which means more energy is used than needs to be.

Smart heating controls can help mitigate this.

Heating control upgrades should therefore be central to conversations between installers and

adjustments to heating controls. For customers who want to take the plunge

customers. And, just as importantly, customers, should be aware that control upgrades can take place at any time, not just when a boiler is being replaced.

BEAMA approved statistics support the positive impact smart heating control upgrades can have. In the latest fi gures, it is seen that installers could save their customers up to 12% if controls are upgraded to a Honeywell Home T6R Smart Thermostat. Whilst a 31% saving can be achieved if a combination of a Honeywell Home T6R Smart Thermostat is installed in conjunction with the Honeywell Home VTL200 TRV solution. This evidence is a good reminder that energy bill reductions are possible with cost-eff ective

and go for a bigger upgrade to their heating controls, greater savings could also be realised. For example, by replacing manual radiator valves and a mechanical thermostat with electronic TRVs and a modulating, OpenTherm zoning thermostat solution - such as the Honeywell Home evohome - a customer could generate savings of up to 32% a year on their energy bills. This is partly because an advanced thermostat

can navigate temperature fl uctuations by monitoring outside weather temperatures. By communicating this to the heating system, the temperature within the property can be adjusted automatically to run as effi ciently as possible by only turning on, and up, when heat is required. The smart weather feature on the Honeywell Home evohome system also off ers improved zone comfort control and energy consumption, based on outside temperature, room temperature and a unique feature that learns the heat losses in each room.

The latest stats

To assist installers, Resideo has launched an informative heating season campaign – ‘Small upgrade, mighty impact.’ Its purpose is to help installers demonstrate to their clients that making small upgrades to their heating controls could deliver a noticeable diff erence to energy bills this winter. The campaign, which will be promoted across media platforms, in merchant branches and at industry events, aims to arm the installer with the communication tools to help their customers. Suggesting a check of the existing heating

controls during a boiler service or upgrade is always good place to start. By taking a few minutes to assess whether a customer’s thermostat is set correctly, and that they know how to use it eff ectively, can really add value. If an older mechanical heating control is in place, recommending options for a newer, digital replacement, might be appropriate.
