Adveco MSS cylinder range for heat pump-based DHW applications
H
ot water specialist Adveco has introduced the next generation of MSS cylinders for heat pump based
DHW projects in commercial buildings. MSS is a specialised range of premium carbon steel primary system vessels designed to serve a diverse range of water and space heating applications which require an inertia tank or energy storage vessel. The MSS range off ers 10 models from 300 litre to 5,000 litre capacity. Each vessel features multiple large, high-capacity connections as standard at high and low levels. These tappings enable the tanks to be used with multiple return fl ow temperatures or multiple heat sources, such as renewables or low- and high-grade heaters. This makes MSS vessels ideal for hot water applications using heat pumps operating at lower temperatures as greater fl ow is needed to raise the kilowatts of the system.
MSS also features additional connections at mid-level providing greater versatility to cater for a wide range of system applications. Designed with a low maximum height (1.87m to 2.265m with insulation) MSS despite its larger volume is easier to install in plantrooms, especially those with limited clearance. The vessels also lend themselves to incorporation into packaged plant rooms to leverage the advantages of off site construction, which include production oversight for improved system quality and rapid delivery to install times.

>B< Sonic – the quick and easy solution for a wide range of applications
E
ase and speed of installation are important elements to any product favoured by installers and that is why >B< Sonic from Conex Bänninger is becoming increasingly popular. This cost-eff ective push-fi t fi tting can be used in a wide range of domestic and commercial applications including drinking water, heating and chilled water systems. It is WRAS and DVGW approved and fully tested and compliant with EN 1254 part 6. >B< Sonic is fl ame-free, thereby minimising health and safety issues; and is designed for use with hard, half-hard and soft copper tubes to EN1057. The perfect joint can be created in seconds – just cut, prepare and push – meaning the product is ideally suited for undertaking repair work within a confi ned space, or in areas where hot works are not suitable. Not only is it easy to fi t, but it is demountable and re-usable up to 20 times before needing to be replaced. >B< Sonic comprises four simple internal components: an EPDM O-ring, a high-grade stainless-steel grip ring, a spacer and a washer, which combine to give a fi rm, but fully rotatable joint. Demounting is easy using the professional release tool.
>B< Sonic is available in sizes 10 to 28mm and can operate at a maximum working temperature of 95°C at 6 bar; with a maximum working pressure of 16 bar at 30°C.

Do I need a new commercial boiler? W
hile it might seem cheaper to keep fi xing small problems in your commercial heating system with ad-hoc engineer visits, it can be a false economy to ‘mend and make do’. You should consider replacing your boiler in your business if you experience any of these common heating headaches… You haven’t got enough hot water First, check the size of your hot water cylinder. Is it a quick recovery cylinder? Is your input temperature from the boiler adequate to achieve hot water temperature? Is it on long enough to match the demand? Strange noises
Parts can become worn or damaged over time. At fi rst, it might be cost-eff ective to replace certain elements that cause knocking or rattling, but these noises are often signs of a bigger problem and that build up over time, which means it could be much more sensible to replace the boiler itself.
Regular repairs
It’s important to get your boiler serviced annually by a fully qualifi ed and Gas Safe registered heating engineer – but if you also need to call the experts more than once a year outside your yearly check, a replacement might be wise. The issues might only need simple tweaks to repair – but even minor work can add up over time.
The right temperature
Lots of businesses struggle to maintain the temperature they need in certain spaces, without over-heating the whole building. One way to do this is to switch from a traditional ‘central’ thermostat to room-by—room temperature control with thermostatic control valves on individual radiators.
Radiators don’t heat up properly
There could be a build-up of sludge in the radiators or pipework, which means your fi lter may not be up to the job. If your boiler is over 10 years old, you may not even have a fi lter fi tted. In either case a new model could be your best fi x. First though, check if your radiators have been bled recently, and if you still have problems, book a service visit.
Boiler has pilot light
If you still have a pilot light, your boiler is probably over 20 years old – and it’s defi nitely worth getting a quote for a new system especially if issues with lighting the pilot are starting to crop up. Older boilers also make it hard to fi nd the parts and expertise you need – and if you do fi nd them, they’ll come with a premium.
Save on bills
You might have noticed your bills creeping up lately. This could be the time of year, increased
usage or price increase from your utility company,
but it could be down to an ineffi cient boiler. Lots of diff erent things can have an impact on running costs, but the main questions you need to ask yourself if you’re reviewing your equipment are: ¡ Have you got an energy effi cient boiler? ¡ Is your heating zoned and controlled effi ciently? ¡ Has your boiler been correctly sized? ¡ Do you have adequate insulation? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, you can probably make savings by changing or replacing your current system or addressing heat loss from your building — as long as you ask for specifi c advice on how to reduce your bills. Tip: Check your boiler’s energy rating A-rated boilers tend to operate at more than 90% effi ciency, with G-rated straining to achieve 70%.
Your boiler leaks
Leaks can be a symptom of – or cause – bigger faults – and should be investigated straight away. Water can damage your building, and if leaks are a regular occurrence they could have caused rusting or corrosion inside the boiler itself which could leave you no alternative but to replace it.
