Whilst the industry was potentially focusing on other areas, for example green energy, a pandemic was developing worldwide which has, and continues to affect the industry significantly.
“From mid-March the situation was changing daily and our utmost priority was acting responsibly in accordance with Government and Public Health England guidelines,” Adrian says.
“It was confirmed fairly early on construction was to continue for essential works, which meant we put procedures in place to actively promote safe working for our colleagues, customers and suppliers. We are proud to have supported critical sectors and our staff have been nothing short of brilliant and understanding.”
While the situation has impacted Smith Brothers, the firm has remained resilient drawing on positives from the situation. “As our staff are a key ingredient to our success, we have been able to draw on such strength throughout the whole COVID-19 crisis. This accompanied with our solid foundations built over 120 years, meant the business could remain adaptive while giving confidence to both our suppliers and customers.”
Smith Brothers is now fully operational with dedicated staff focused on ensuring safety standards and government advice are implemented. They are also keen to stress the ongoing work behind the scenes to improve further as the business looks at ways to constantly evolve.
SBS Glasgow
The opening of Smith Brothers first Scotland based branch was delayed until the summer. Scott Gilmour and his team will look to build on the impressive growth made over recent decades by the company, from the ultra-modern premises located on the Clyde Gateway East – Glasgow’s newest business site located on the south side of London Road. The site is close to junction 2A on the M74 and is just a 10-minute drive away from Glasgow’s city centre.
Activities planned by SBS ove the summer include: • New Engineers’ Guide: New literature giving key information on the company’s air conditioning range. • Video content: With the launch of the Smith Brothers YouTube channel, customers can see the operation like never before, helping viewers understand the capacity available at a local level through the branch network.
• 2020 Awards: Although a few industry award ceremonies have been postponed this year, once they are rescheduled Smith Brothers will continue to support the industry and best practice. On an operational level Adrian says: “The SBS history books will of course highlight COVID-19 and the opening of our Glasgow branch.
Adrian expands: “In Scott we have someone with over 15 years of merchant experience which follows our ethos of employing experienced and knowledgeable staff.”
Future plans
The business is looking forward as the industry starts to regain some sort of normality with obvious and necessary changes. This includes a committment to personal development, at both branch and national level, with continuous training for the benefit and support to the customers.
“However, the business has always been proactive looking internally at ways to improve. This has been no different in 2020, and customers will see these advancements in the coming months.” These plans Adrian reassures will not comprise current operations nor service levels.
“Our investment strategy is for sustainable growth through the continued development of our people, branches and product range, with the support of our suppliers and shareholders. Smith Brothers will continue to maintain a desire to surpass customers’ expectations with a level of service that will continually add value to their changing needs.”
