ADEY LOBBYING INFLUENCES NEW GOVERNMENT CAMPAIGN

T

he intervention of Siobhan Baillie, MP for the Stroud, saw ‘sludge’ raised as an issue with

Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ), prior to his department recommending whole system maintenance, including water treatment, as part of a government energy saving campaign. Since being invited to ADEY’s headquarters in Stroud in February to hear about the role of eff ective water treatment in helping to lower energy use and reduce carbon emissions from the home, Ms Baillie has spoken about radiator sludge twice in Parliament. In a recent meeting with the Secretary of State, Ms

Baillie used the ADEY demo jar to illustrate the problem of dirty system water and the impact of magnetic fi ltration in system cleaning. She referred to this demonstration when speaking on the subject in the House of Commons, calling on the government to include water treatment in their energy saving communications campaigns and to “look a bit more lively” on this ahead of next winter. This week, the government’s ‘Help for Households’ online guide has been updated with advice for homeowners preparing to reduce their energy consumption and bills next winter including advice for a Deep Clean of the System and Servicing. Neil Watson, ADEY’s chief technical offi cer, comments:

“To hear that the next government communications campaign for homeowners will include advice to clean

and maintain their heating systems feels like a real landmark moment. “We have been working with others in our industry to raise awareness of the scale of the problem of ineffi cient heating, and the ways it can be addressed, for many years. While understanding of the benefi ts of whole system testing, cleaning and maintenance has grown among installers, it’s not a subject that

homeowners are familiar with. “That’s why Siobhan’s support is so signifi cant in helping us to raise the subject higher up the government’s agenda. By talking about sludge in Parliament, and directly with the Secretary of State, she is shining the spotlight on system cleaning and maintenance as a low- cost solution that can improve system effi ciency and save people money. Siobhan Baillie commented: “I am really chuff ed that tackling radiator sludge will now be part of the government’s advice to cut heating costs this winter after our campaign. “Government is working to ensure that householders are armed with energy effi ciency knowledge and information during cost-of-living pressures so it never made sense to miss out water fi ltration measures from the advice. “Radiator sludge may be one of the strangest things

I’ve been known to successfully campaign about but raising awareness about this will make a diff erence to households around the country.”

INDUSTRY URGED TO LEARN FROM LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE OUTBREAK

F

ollowing reports of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease at a plastics manufacturer’s facilities, Wilo is calling on stakeholders involved in plumbing, heating and building services to avoid making the same mistakes. Wilo, the effi ciency-fi rst pump manufacturer, wants

installers, specifi ers and building owners to proactively manage the risks of legionella bacteria to avoid similar scenarios in future and help better protect people. David Williamson, sales & marketing director at

Wilo, also advises that measures as straightforward as installing a secondary hot water circulator pump can safeguard against non-compliance while lowering energy consumption and costs. He said: “As we’ve seen in this case, Legionnaires’ Disease is a highly dangerous, potentially life-threatening condition that can be wholly avoided if plumbing systems are managed correctly.

“This is one of the more extreme cases that we’ve seen in the industry. However, it’s possible that many plumbing systems across both commercial and residential properties are potentially in very similar situations. “That said, there are some relatively straightforward solutions, and modern, innovative circulator pumps, like our Stratos-PICO Z and Stratos-MAXO Z ranges, are one way to prevent Legionella bacteria from breeding. The ultimate benefi t is that people are not put at risk, but for building owners and managers, it also means peace of mind from health and safety responsibilities and energy usage.”
