Time to act on skills

T

he HVAC sector has been facing a significant skills shortage for some time and the industry needs to

address this if it is to meet the demand for its services.

The situation is made worse by a shortage of courses, an ageing workforce, and a decline in the number of people entering the sector. However, the call for HVAC services has

never been higher, driven by the demand for energy efficient buildings, and an increasing focus on sustainability and indoor air quality.

The seriousness of the skills shortage is highlighted on pg 10 by co-founder of SFE Services Sophie Davenport who offers insight into the situation and calls for colleges to be proactive. On the flip side however, it must be said that numerous stakeholders and trade associations have been promoting skills in HVAC and engineering and it is good to see the number of heat pump training courses currently being promoted. Some of these are highlighted in our training features on pg 12 & 13. Other features in this issue include Fluid

Control, Social Housing, Heat Transfer Fluids, Water Treatment, Renewables and HVR Domestic.
